Could be a factory second, is there a number 2 stamped into the butt end of the handle?

It's a factory second. The 2 is their way of marking it as such. Much like how Kershaw lasers "XXXX" on the blade of theirs.

It means you have a real Cold Steel knife. However, it was too messed up to sell as a normal knife, so they sold it for a cheaper price and marked it a "second" ie the #2 on the butt. Your guy you bought it from should have known that, and told you.

"To messed up to sell" In this case does this mean it is the stamp? and the rest of the knife is ok or what?

Not "too messed up to sell" but rather "too messed up to sell at normal price." They don't sell ones that have serious problems with them as it would diminish their brand strength. It's almost certainly just the stamp that's the issue.

Yeah, it could be nothing more than the stamp. The rest of the knife should be good to go. Take Kershaws seconds for example...There are real good deals to be had, because a mark is off or the coating imperfect. Its no big deal unless you're really into the small details.

I have a CS SRK 2cd that I bought sometime in the nineties. It was my truck knife for a lot years and spent sometime in the woods with me. I always thought of it as a capable knife that I could not hurt. I recently got the nerve to to reprofile the edge with a belt sander. It turned out pretty well although it removed about half of the protective coating.

So you probably paid more for it than you would have liked, but you have a knfe you can use as hard as you like and not worry about. Hope this helps.

Factory Seconds with the (2) stamp are seconds for cosmetic reasons only. Usually something with the coating or a nick in the kraton handle. They are perfect for user blades

As swamp mentioned though, whoever sold you the knife should have told you it was a second since that does affect the value of the knife.

good score, new srk carbonV knives are hard to come by. Use the hell out of it as a second is not collectable but highly useable so it takes the "should I keep it mint" out of your head.

I have a carbonV trailmaster, 2 oda's(one a second), and a recon tanto. The srk is one that I want.

Your knife is fine.

You just bought a factory "second", which may cover any number of issues such as scratches on blade or handle, bad stamping, bad paint coat, uneven grinding of edge. None of these will affect the performance of the knife. It is usually a matter of cosmetics, not performance failure. They just don't want to throw away a perfectly good knife, so will sell it for cheaper.

It's usually a cosmetic defect, you may have paid more than you should have but you have a perfectly functional knife that was made by Camillus knives with good carbon steel and heat treat.

Sorry I wasn't very clear. The guys above covered it for me though. Thanks guys.
