Did I make a mistake on a Cattaragus?

I picked up an older Boker USA stockman, pinched bolsters, carbon steel blade and red bone handles, long nail pull too. Very nice looking, and as soon as I get net service back at home, I'll post it up. I did pass up on an old Cattaragus whittler, reminded me of the Case seahorse whittler, one main blade and two small blades on the opposite end, very nice. Looked like stag scales, very nice walk and talk. Price was a little high in my opinion. I've never seen an original Cattaragus, I was very impressed. I might go back up later this week after work, and just get it.

The Cattaragus sounds like a nice knife. I wouldn't worry about it being a bit high in price as in the future, it's value will catch up with what you pay for it. Looking forward to pictures of it and the Boker.

If you are able, I'd snap a couple pictures of the Catt and post them. There are a lot of seriously reworked Catt's floating around

IIRC, after the Catt factory closed, a flood of Catt parts got out onto the market. There were a lot of knives pieced together from this - most only partially from Catt parts. One suspicious sign to look for are very light tang stamps - not absolute of course, but you need to be very careful if you see that.

That was a fear holding me back from getting it. I don't normally collect these, and don't know much about them.

The tang stamp was a little lighter in spots, but I thought that was due to the age of the knife.

I have the owners number, he wasn't there when I was. I might start wheelin' and dealin'.

The Catt trademarks have been used by some other companies along the way as well -- most recently by AG Russell on a number of knives over the last 10 years or more (most of AG's have been quite nice).

I hope it's okay to quote the price, I won't say on the forums where I saw it. Is $85.00 too much for a whittler in good condition?

Prices independent of authenticity and knowing what you are paying for have little meaning. Let's get back into the discussion of the knife itself and determining whether it is "real" or not.

BRL's forum excels at identification and valuation. Let's try to avoid unnecessary overlap especially in terms of the commercial aspects.
