Did Jerry Make the SH-1 Himself?

Hey guys, did Jerry make the SH-1 himself, or was there a "shop" back then that made it? Would you consider it a handmade knife as in a true custom knife or more of a mid-tech or production knife in terms of how it was manufactured? Thanks

If you look at the busse history in the newsletter, it says that when busse opened up "Busse Combat" as a company (rather then himself as a custom maker), he started with a concentration on cnc machining and efficient production models. If you go back far enough, into the earliest straight handles and before, I believe that jerry did have a hand in each knifes creation. But I don't know when he started using cnc, so it may have been mid tech early on.

Maybe Jerry will chime in and give us the skinny.
I'd be interested in knowing how much was CNC vs done by hand????

As I remember he had a hand in all parts of production and Sharpened all of the knives, bear in mind I have had a drink or two,ooo and Slept since I was told all of this about ten years ago.

I believe we got our first automated Nicholas grinder in 1995 and our first FADAL 3016 CNC in 1997. The Steel Heart One, as well as all of the other blades we made back then, were pretty much made by hand on very simple homemade grinders. I still have some of the original grinders I made in the 1980s that have wooden contact wheels with rubber traction strip stapled to the faces!!!! The vast majority of the steel blanks and all of the handles were cut out with a bandsaw and a six pack.

Just thinking about it makes me want to drink!!!!

It is amazing what a guy can do when you have a six pack to help you out

Ha ha, that's good. So sounds like there was a team back then, not just Jerry, so it's tough to know who actually made the knife. Also sounds like Jerry probably had something to do with it, but not sure how much. Sounds like the six pack was making lots of knives. And it appears that the knife was made by hand on basic equipment, nuthin' fancy. I don't know what year the SH-1's were made, but I'm guessing before 1995 judging by your post.

The SH-1 was outsourced by Jerry to Mtech. They were the only ones with the equipment, skills and experience.
