Did not want to wait for an RMJ tactical (even though I still want one)

Fell in love with the RMJ designs, his hawk's IMO are second to none both the tacticool and historic. Lusted after them very much but can't afford one so I figured I'd make my own. Forged this from one piece of new truck spring drop, that was about 2.5"-3" wide by 8"-10" long by 3/8" thick. There is no welds, it is one piece.

Let me know what you all think. Not sure what to do with the handle whether to go wood/micarta slabs or cord wrap.

Look in to horse mat slabs or rubber for the handle material. You should think about putting some holes in the handle for weight reduction and a bottom lanyard hole. I love homemade stuff. It’s looking good so far.

Some people like to leave a space between the handle and the head, but I like to be able to comfortably chouck up on the head.

Sam that's wicked, well done. Robin has talked about thick leather as a good shock-absorbing handle. Would look sweet, too.

thanks guys. Ed, good advice about the handle.

PRich thanks, a leather handle, I am thinking either slabs pinned on or a spiral wrap would be cool.

Looks good to me! It's a lot of work making it one piece if you are forging it, no matter how you do it.
Keep up the good work,
RMJ

Was just thinking, if you wanted to make the handle lighter, you could forge the handle narrower, then fuller the middle so that it thins out in the middle and spreads the handle width. That would give you a pocket with a web, similar to the current Talon/Kestrel construction. Easy enough to do since you are forging and half the time of machining or drilling it.

Very nice. What is the weight so far, and do you plan on doing somthing to make it lighter? Taper the tang, and add some micarta scales to that bad boy!

very nice job, for a simple handle you could see if what size of auto wate hose would slice on tightly and get a foot or so and slip it on. but it would look good with any kind of handle

Thanks guys!

Big thanks to you Ryan, they are alot of work. That's a great idea about the fuller, I was thinking about maybe knocking in a section of the haft corners between the handle area and the head (giving an elongated octagonal cross section) to lighten things up.

FOxx, the balance and weight are pretty good already, think I'm going to leather wrap the handle with holes drilled in the tang maybe.

Nice work! You've come a long way in your forging--I remember some of your early posts on SFI.

Thanks guys!

HT'd it up tonight, chipped at concrete with the spike no problem, look forward to getting the handle wrapped and calling it done. I broke some of the corners with a file, made it look even meaner.

Great work looks mean:) Please post some use pics when you get a chance I want to see her work.
