I have a BG ASH on its way to me and I'm thinking about stripping it...
Now, did someone already strip one? What do you guys think the finish is under the coating?
If someone decides to strip one, please post a pic or two here!
Thanks!

Mine will get stripper once I get it...once I pay for it...once I get the email

It's not an ASH but the vex i just stripped was like that under the coating

Thanks for the pic Raoh!
Lance, when you get it, go for it, maybe you will get yours before I do...Mine has to get to Austria.
Is corrosion really auch an issue with SR101?

yes and no

If it is un-treated it will rust if you touch it, I have gotten knives with rust fingerprints in it.

If that is not an issue to you personally and you never plan on selling the knife, then it is no issue. There are plenty of knives across the world that have rust or a patina on them and are used for decades, Jeff Randall of ESEE notoriety did a great article years ago about rust and knives. He basically said most if not all using knives in the South American jungle have rust on them and are used every day.

Also what I have found the rust you will get on naked SR 101. But it is mostly surface rust meaning it will take a long time to corrode the knife to real damage, People have found roman swords that are literally 100's of years if not 1000's of years old that have not rusted to nothing :)

If you ever plan on selling it, expect to take a loss if you strip it.
But if you plan on using and keeping it for years and years strip away.

Thanks for your long answer David!
I read SR101 takes a good patina, thought about blueing it, however since that is not food save, I will maybe patina the knife by cutting a lot of meat and vegetables...
I really dont like any rust on my blades.
I do not intend to sell the knife, so I will probably etch to Logo when I get it, then use it till the coating comes off and then I may strip it.
I am so excited to get it, I nearly opted for the Blue&Black G10 like you did, however in the end I went with Black Canvas on a black blade.

I say strip it.

I stripped my Ratmandu SR101 and the Banana trees took care of the rest.

Awesome looking RMD man! I think I will go for it...
Unfortunately we do not have banana trees here in Austria!

I bet you could find one. If not order one off ebay. Set it out in the spring and it will dye in the fall. Then you have to cut it down. Your winters may be a little worse than here but the cold tolerant ones come back every spring here.

Better yet, leave it indoors all year and have all your friends over for a Patina Party - :) They look pretty cool too.

I never will. Like the muddy coating too much to wanna take off. Just gonna beat it smooth.

Thanks guys, but I think I'll find something else to get a cool patina, no banana-tree-import necessary...
Ulf that muddy coating does look great!
The more I see those pics I regtet not having ordered a black blade with blue&black G10 or red&black on muddy blade.
Red&Black G10 does not seem to be very popular, you do not see it too often. People don't order it it seems like...why is that? If someone ordered red&black BGASH please post a pic!
Is there something like red&black micarta you can get from the custom shop?
I wanted my first micarta-handled busse to be an ASH so I did not go with one of the colorfull G10 options.

I ordered Black on Black Canvas and love it, may not be as exciting as the G-10 options, but I love everything about it. I was worried i should have gotten black/green G-10 but once it came in i forgot all about it

Last night, after a few beers and being in trouble with the wife, I headed to the basement... what can I work on? hmmmm... Well, the BGASH is now naked! She's still got a good bit of heavy decarb, but she's naked. I'll post some pics soon! The decarb seems a little tougher to remove than from infi! She's got a few snail trails from the production process, but she'll be a beauty. She went under the knife for a tummy tuck, but I'll post about that in another tread!

Well.... She's not finished, but after a couple of hours, I'm done for today...

Mine should ship within the week.
I think I'm going for as high of a mirror as I can.
