Is there any truth to the rumor that Chris Carraci approached Spyderco with the AFCK first and Spyderco decided not to make it? If so I wonder if there are any regrets about not producing this knife? It is probably Benchmades biggest seller.

The AFCK was primarily designed by Mark McWillis, not Caracci, though some of Caracci's initial ideas were incorporated, it wasn't totally Caracci's design...I'm not sure of the whole Spyderco involvement, but Caracci also approached Al Mar Knives with a design, and they, too, turned it down..

Dan - As I remember it, Chris called Spyderco and asked if we were interested in a design. We had alrady seen Chris' video on the Police model. As I understand it, his design idea was a modification of The Police Model.

We told Chris that we had more models than we could produce at the time.

When Lester & Mark showed me the original design, I helped make some changes before final production.

If you lay the AFCK over the Police Model, you will see similarities, like the curve of the handle. Most of BM's models have straight handles. Add the round hole and a clip and it's easy to see Spyderco's influence on the AFCK. Take away the curved handle, the round hole, the clip & teeth and see what's left?

We are pleased that BM was able to do well with the AFCK. Lester needed a winner and BM paid Spyderco royalties on the model.

We've turned down a number of good sellers over the years. For one reason or another. We all need good ideas. It is not healthy for the knife industry to go without innovation.

Thanks for the info Sal. I just ordered a M-2 AFCK. I felt a little guilty about purchasing a non Spyderco. But if I look at it like a Benchmade Spyderco I dont feel so bad.

Dennis - Perhaps you should think of it as a collaboration.

But you should never feel guilty about purchasing a quality piece from any maker. Life is to enjoy. Smell all of the flowers, eat all of the flavors. You will find your favorites. Faithful is for mates.
