Did SR3v become dull after chopping just two coconuts?

The knife is a Free Rein 28 The front section of the knife cuts through paper smoothly before chopping, but after chopping coconuts, it becomes ineffective. It struggles to cut A4 paper, and when I used the middle and back sections of the blade to cut a few times, it still handled A4 paper decently. I’m not sure if the front section has a factory edge issue or if it's been dull due to some burrs being removed, or if it's a heat treatment problem. Very disappointed. This thing doesn’t even look good, I got it purely for its performance, and now… it's just frustrating

Not sure, but Busse has heat treatment dialed in.

You don’t think it looks good, but you bought it purely for performance. Non-sequitur.

I like this vid:

If you feel it’s not performing, you can contact Busse directly (encouraged). Because, they stand behind their product.

I'd be very surprised if the knife had a bad heat treat and you've already touched on the main likely culprits which I'd test and rule out first. Those being a suboptimal factory edge or a burr present causing the edge to collapse.

Either way, resharpening will take care of it unless the HT is bad. I'm betting that after a single sharpening session it'll improve and after a few more sharpening sessions, it'll improve even more. This is fairly common with factory edges.

Do you have a good handle on sharpening your own blades? This longer blade will undoubtedly be a bit trickier than say a 5 inch blade, but should still be doable with basic equipment.

If it were me, I'd take a really coarse stone and grind the edge right off, as in put the stone perpendicular to the edge and grind off any potentially compromised steel and regrind a new edge back on. You don't have to take the entire secondary bevel off, but the very apex should be ground off and set back maybe .010" (.25mm) or so before putting your new edge back on. I bet you'll find this helps immensely assuming your sharpening is good and the HT is good (which it probably is).

Try it out and let us know what you find!

Coconut hair can be rough on the edge but, it cuts coconuts fine right? Then who cares about cutting paper? Performance is cutting coconuts with ease. The Free Rein is thick but light, comes with a good working edge, but have improved to razor sharpness edge with stropping with Gunny Juice on balsa wood.

Contact the shop FIRST. Give us the opportunity to look at the problem and to fix it. If we DO NOT fix the problem or are so drunk that we refuse to assist you, (This has NEVER happened) then you can bring it to the forums and feel free to vent.

Given the proper tools, it does not take much to destroy a great knife. Given the internet, it does not take much to destroy a great reputation.

We have NEVER left a customer unsatisfied, when given the opportunity.

If you post about a problem before giving us the opportunity to fix it, your post may be deleted or locked.

Did you happen to contact the maker first ?

Have you you touched up the edge? Every knife is going to dull. And the degree to which it dulls depends on the task you ask of it. If I hacked through coconuts I wouldn't be surprised Id need to touch up an edge.

你好 我重新磨了刃后 再次试了一下砍椰子 这次没有问题了 。 我在中国,如果产品有问题,不知道能不能享受到你们的售后服务,hahaha
He said "You are good, I re-grinded it and tried it again, this time there was no problem. I am in China, if the product has a problem, I don't know, I can't enjoy your after-sales service."

Thank you for the update and glad to hear it's working well for you! Enjoy that beast!

I'm curious how this can be owned in China. Would you please tell us a bit about yourself and how you acquired the Free Reign? Pics would be appreciated as well.

…….why ? There are LOTS of Busses in China ? Mostly the they use proxy shippers in the US. I know one FBM I sold here (one of only three Busses I have sold) ended up there.

我很好奇这东西在中国怎么能买到。能不能跟我们简单介绍一下你自己,以及你是如何获得“自由统治”的?如果能提供照片就更好了。

Yep, even with sweet custom reverse blade catches & wagon wheel mosaic pins.

Other ones look better… be aware.
They even charge a lot, because, of course… they’re “INFI.”

Factory edge? Could have been slightly over heated, may need a few sharpenings.

I've never had a Busse that didn't perform better after it's first sharpening.
