I am constantly amazed /amused by the statements and erroneous information people put in for sale ads. Here is a new one. The knife looks to be a 2002 Vanguard, can't see the tang mark but it has a "100 YEARS" sheath.

For sale is a mid 90's buck hunting knife in excellent condition. It is made of good quality steel before NAFTA really took effect.

Here's the answer I just received from that seller:

Dear plumberdv,

A lot of the knives componets are made in china now, even ones that are assembled in the USA. You see the companies get around the made in China if so much assembly work is done on the product in this country. So in reality even if its stamped made in USA you dont know if all or part of it was. This applies to about every product made out there period. Soligen has all of their steel forged in china from what i understand Also Smith and Wesson knives are forged in china. that is why your older tool steel that is made in the USA is normally a higher quality and why older tools of all types even if used and abused are valued by craftsmen and tradesmen, around here they scour yard sales for older stuff.

Follow up message from the same guy.

Dear plumberdv,

I like the buck brand, they make good quality knives, I have some older buck knives myself that I use which were built in the 60's. But I know what I talk about on country of origin thats why I said what I said. Very simply anything that comes after Nafta passed is suspect now, to operate otherwise is foolish on the quality of the steel, no matter if its a knife, a socket, or a shovel.

Which wouldn't be enough to fill a thimble...........

Really? "forged" I wonder if he finds a lot of mass produced knives in that price range that were forged.........

:) What a chuckle head.

LOL, here's a picture of the tang stamp of the knife he's listing. It shows how far up his rear end his head is. It's a 2002 that falls well into the NAFTA era (which started in 1994) that he says is so suspect. He said mid-90's so he doesn't know anything about Bucks either.

Check the listing now.

NAFTA was between Canada, the United States, and Mexico. China doesn't play into it. I recall Ross Perot describing it as "one giant sucking sound going south" for American industry.

You're right and I asked the seller exactly what China had to do with NAFTA. The silence was deafening. ;)

Gotta say all kidding aside about the wording, the asking price is a really good deal and free shipping to boot.

I, personally, was invited to take part in a class action lawsuit against leatherman years ago for this. A relative of a friend was trying to get it started. Its a sad thing that there are things that are not 100% made in the USA but I couldnt see sueing over it. I just know where to spend my money next time.

Seperate but related issue: is the buck 100 series fixed blades made like this? Parts from here and there assembled and stamped here? I know the sheaths are made in Mexico but what about the knife?

It's my belief that the 100 series is 100% made in the USA. I'm confident in saying that because Buck has a couple of knives that are assembled in the USA using both USA and imported parts. They're clearly marked with that info on the packaging, so if the 100 series used imported parts, I'm sure they'd label them that way.
