I was grinding a 12" blade camp knife, had it down to 600 grit, and Screwed it up beyond repair, no matter what I did I just kept making it worse. I tried to throw it through a cement wall, I hate days like this.

shoot Roy your lucky, if you just have one day like that, when I have one day like that it usually runs into weeks before I can break the spell. Sure do make this knifemaking interesting doesn't it.

I can feel your pain. But like my mama said years ago when I swallowed a quarter, don't worry it will pass. :D

One of those days!!! Hell I`m workin on the second
month!! like that. Made the same knife three times
today before I got it right. An it`s NOT a new design.
:(

Man I hope you only have a day like this once in awhile...I have finally (Ihope, knock on wood) got out of a almost year slump of everything going wrong..
Now Playing catch up is even worse I think..

I know how it can be. I watched some 1095 hot rolled steel warp while I was grinding it. I wasn't building up too much heat or anything like that. I don't think I'll order any more steel from Admiral. I have had this happen with other steel I have gotten from them. I believe their steel shear is stressing the metal. I spent some time straightening it and it came out of the quench pretty straight.Had me really POed for a while.

Roy,

Glad I brightened your day a little, life's to short to let the small things bother you. I know that this knifemaking can be flustrating at times but hey it's just a knife, I look at these kind of days as learning days. No biggy just try not to make the same fu*%*@##&% mistakes again.:D But when they do happen, learn from them, there's something gained from every day I make knives, good days or bad. ;)

been working with 1/8" O-1 and small knives and decided to make a big one so I ordered some 1/4" L6. Started out as a 10" drop point blade. Now I don't know if I was making mistakes exactly but in the continous redesigning process I may end up with a 4" clip point.

Am I right in 'thinking' that Admiral Steels' L6 grinds very very easily?

Roy,
Hang in there. It will get better.
I'm trying to finish a whole bunch of folders for the Blade Show and I know that Mr. Murphy (of Murphy's Law) is just waiting to jump in. :)
I got alot of respect for Mr Murphy:)

Kit,
Ahhhhhh, I forgot about Mr. Murphy. I know it's just a piece of steel and there will still be a new day tomorrow. But sometimes, It just makes me go out side the shop and see how far I can throw it, sometimes I think I should get a gold metal in the olympics for some of my throws. 10: for distances 10: for creativity 10: depth of steel embedded into a hard object.:D :D :D

Some day it's just impossible to grind knives... I don't know why that is, but when I go over to the shop and see it's gonne be one of those can't grind days, I stop and clean up or make folder pivots on the lathe or go back home and hand sand or whatever... I've tried fighting it but never seem to win. My advice is if seems to be a day where you can't grind, quit while you're ahead... because there are other days where even really difficult blades come out great!

My bad day started about a year ago when I lost the use of my right foot, so I learned to grind sitting down. Everybody has off days and we've all screwed up a blade or two. I'm also familiar with the start out with a bowie and end up with a bird and trout knife problem. Actually the little knife came out great. There are days in my shop where every piece of machinery is just waiting for me to come near it and try my luck. On days like that make sure you don't try to buff something.

:D :D :D

Shoot....I made a sword once and ended up with a bird & Trout!:o :D :o

This is why I have a 3 strike rule in my shop..I figure if I screw something up 3 times I am not going to get it at that time and go to the house for awhile. This way I don't really mess something up..

Naw -- Never happened to me!

Dave

PS I got a bridge to sell ya...

PPS Actually I'd go throw-for-throw with you some days, Roy

I am thinking of a new shop rule! When I really screw something up that needs to be thrown a great distance, I am just going to STOP, RELAX, and go to SEARS HARDWARE, and walk around and look at tools for several hours,GOD I love that place, I actually drool sometimes.

Speaking about Sears, I have a friend who says his fantasy is to go to Home Depot and roll around naked in the power tool section. That one always cracks me up.
Rene, if this was easy, everyone would be doing it. When I'm doing it right, I get into THE ZONE-it is my favorite place, and, my greatest reward. When in THE ZONE, everything happens as it should, seemingly without effort and with perfect result. It is beautiful.
Unfortunately, once you spend some time in THE ZONE, the times when you are NOT in THE ZONE kinda suck, to put it bluntly. On those days, you just gotta go work through it and tough it out.
Sometimes, you may have no touch for grinding-so, do something else instead. Profile blades, sweep the floor, and think about THE ZONE...

SEARS? I can't look at a Garrett Wade catalog without touching myself. It would be ironic if I went blind and couldn't look anymore.:D

Man I have become obsesed with gwtting a milling machine and a lathe and a surface grinder...Boy are there a lot of them to choose from, plus all the cool little toys that go along with them.I can't get past any kind of store that has machines or catalogs anymore..Now if I can just get enough knives sold to buy this stuff..Someday maybe...
But boy is it fun to dream..

Bruce,
Can I ask you a personal question, is your bathroom filling up tool catolog? This is a sure sign that your hooked. I just can figured it out, how come women yell at you for reading in the bathroom...
My Girlfriend say what the heck are you doing in there so long.
Hey when the newest MSC flyer comes in...Hope no one has to go!!!:D
