... that your supplies are getting out of hand? A couple of days ago I got 63 pounds of African blackwood... to add to the several dozen stabilized blocks I have, not to mention the more than 10+ pounds of ivory, horn and antler, and some scales (which is odd given how few full tang knives I make).

Clearly, I have a problem.

I guess the good news is that wood products get a LOOOOONG time to acclimate before I'll get around to using them.

The bad news is I work so slowly they will likely never get used.

According to WA proposition BS357M2L - it's illegal for a meticulous knifecrafter to posses more than 20 lbs of blackwood, 2 dozen of stabilized stuff, 1oz of ivory. I'll bear the burden for you... send them my way.

Guilty, me to.
Although my stack doesn't add up to 63pounds.
Well, there's worse addictions......
(don't forget to label what is what, you might not remember in a decade or two)

By the way if there's blackwood with spint in your collection, don't cut the spint off as waste. Polished it goes very well with the black!

I'm not familiar with the word "spint". Does that refer to the lighter sapwood sections?

As an aside, I cut off a couple of small hunks of blackwood (to remove the wormholes) and showed the salvaged pieces to my wife. She opined, "The doesn't even look like real wood." She knocked two pieces together and said, "It doesn't sound like wood either!" She then stuck her nose on it and noted, "It doesn't smell like any wood I've ever smelled. Are you sure it's wood?" :)

She does amuse me sometimes.

Yeah, I've got a drawer full of titanium, probably about 20 lbs. worth. Stuff accumulates, no matter how much we try to disavow our pack-rat ancestry.

With me, it's files. I do believe I have every known type of file in the world. Well, almost.

Yes sapwood, sorry I communicate in three languages and sometimes when I get tired I start mixing them up.
Spint is sapwood. I love the looks of it:

Hello, my name is teddy and I am a tool junkie (supplies too). I just got actively involved in knife making when I closed my retail studio and, of course, I had to acquire all the necessary tools for the job. So many tools- so little time. :) At 70 years old, I now have all the tools, various types of steel, and handle material that I can use in my lifetime.

So why do I keep on buying?????

@smithy- you buy.. because you care... :)

@Hengelo- curious about the knife with sapwood above- chip-carving? Or just a little utility box-killer?

Just a handy knife in the shop, but I've been thinking about some wood cutting with it

thank god you guys all have this issue... I was just at princess auto (similar to your HF for Canada) buying a bunch of stuff I "may" use later... and I've always wondered if I was a little off. this thread makes me feel normal... well, knife-maker normal at least.

one of the most rewarding things is having those days when you're building something and think... if I only had blank. ah, but I do... I've had blank laying under my leather for 9 years now. pack-ratting can pay off.

Is the iron wood from Gilmer? How is the quality? I have been interested in one of those bundles they sell but that would be more than I could possibly use. Are you interested in selling any of it?

I tend to run short on materials now and then, but the tools side of things gets a bit much...
About to go put $400 toward a full size knee mill (Index 675) for sale in town... the little round column JET is pissing me off too much, wandering cut and no quill micrometer dial.
And, finishing my Sasquash forging press is happening now... but always takes a bit more money and time yet!

I have only bought from Gilmer once (so far), but the quality and service is excellent.
