As Pakcik Bill suggested in one of his early email, I gave Nepali names to all my Khukuris:

1. Dhaju ie. Big Brother (15” AK).
2. Lamo ie. The Long One (20” Sirupati).
3. Ramrai ie. The Beautiful One (15” BAS).
4. Pauji ie. The Warrior (18” WW II).
5. Insyaa-Allaah! I plan to named my oncoming 18th Century as Bahadur ie. The Brave One.
6. Insyaa-Allaah! I plan to named my oncoming 2nd 20” Sirupati as Palaji ie Father - because it was rehandled by Palaji - actually I have to ask his permission 1st.

Palaji, is it OK if I named my Beefy Sirupati as Palaji? Otherwise, please suggest one good name (in Nepali) for me.

I think practices of giving names to swords @ knives is an old tradition exist in every culture. Our Great Prophet Muhammad SAW named his sword as Zu-(a)lfikar. Hang Tuah our Malaysian legendary hero reknown for his MA’s skill had a long Keris by the name of Taming Sari. I was also informed by Pakcik Bill that Bahadur is a popular name for Khukuris. I think there is a sword by the name Excalibur – was it the one belong to legendary King Richard?

Furthermore, all HI Khukuris are made by those Kamis with Kamis family roots going back to maybe around 400 years - meaning 400 years of steel & khukuris knowledge & experinces are pounded & shaped into our Khukuris. Then, those Khukuris were being blessed with blood & good spells by Kamis before being sent to Pakcik Bill. I believe by giving names to those Khukuris is actually the final touch & the integral part of the spiritual aspect of our Khukuris.

Yvsa, is American Indian gives names to their tomahawks or other weapons?

Pakcik Bill, insyaa-Allaah! I'll named two of my future Khukuris with yours & Makcik Yangdu's names so that both of your names will be remembered for a long long time in my future family generations!

Wa-(A)lhamdi-li-(A)llaahi-robbi-(a)'aalamiin!

The 21" I just took in reminds me of a ferret: long, thin and fast. The name "Skinnybeast" is an indirect reference to a ferret.

Jim

I refer to my 15"AK as the "Angry Koala". I stole it from a forum member, but it was just too funny to pass up!

Mohd ( is that a nickname or short form for Mohammed/Muhammad?):

Sanu's forward curving "Sun, Moon, & Stars" ( Surya, Chandra, Tara ) came with a name I wouldn't dare try to change.

My #2142 38 1/2" bladed 4' overall hand-and-a-half Del Tin is named "Gladius Paracletus" ( sword of the dove/ sword of the spirit ).

And I have a Marto "Don Quixote" sword/ rapier.

And "Excalibur" is the lengendary "sword in the stone" pulled out by King Arthur.

PS, come to think of it, I sometimes refer to the 800 pound Salyan as "Sumo".

Many people try to call Forward Curving #1 'Tic-Tac-Toe' (since Sanu put X's and O's on it). I'm still not quite sure what it's name is, but Tic Tac To is not it.

Jeff-

May I suggest "GridIron"? Somehow "GridSteel" doesn't sound quite right...

I can see I need to come up with better names for my khuk's. "Ol' Betsy" and "Bill" now appear to be sadly lacking.

Well, X's and O's at the end of a letter do usually mean "hugs and kisses". ROFLMAO

Rusty I thought of Hugs 'n' Kisses also but being at my office I didn't give it too much thought or I'd LMAO myself.

One of my Viking friends has a spear named (in old Norse) 'feeder-of-the-doves-of-war', doves of war being ravens. Now THAT'S a name.

I think I'm just going to have to wait for it to tell me. For instance, my friend Dale got a new sword once and immediately dropped it on his foot, cutting him pretty well. That sword was from then on named Bitch.

Funny you should ask;in the old days,my Grandma never said,"Get the shotgun. She said,Get Old Betsy.",or "Get Chipmunk.",the .22 that also stood by the back door.God and Soldiers,we adore. In times of trouble, nothing more.

I would like to, but I don't the language. What are "Dragon," "Father of Dragon," and "Mother of Dragon" in Nepalese?

Tom

While I have an affinity to each and every one of my khukuris, I haven't gotten around to naming it. Just want to feel the spirit of it from the blade to handle to hand to arm and throughout while working it... Guess it doesn't matter what one calls it as long as one feels connected to it.

The sirupati that went throught the nail is named Rusty, and the 22" AK is named Slim.

Ram Bahadur Bishwkarma special was named R.B., but it is gone now.

Still waiting for good names for the others.

"Smooth Bastard..."

Rusty.

Mohd is a Malay abreviation for Mohammad. It is my 1st personal name. The one I used for the email address is my 2nd personal name. A Moslem name is using a bit different format. We don't have surname. It always a personal name BUT connected to father's name - sometimes somebody connected his name to his father's, grandfather's, grand-grandfather's ... for few above generations!

Heh! heh! I guess all this naming convention is not applicable for Khukuris!

Mohd,we didn`t bother with surnames long ago.My Tic tac toe is well documented. My .375 H&H is Lucretia. She is pure poison.

Dave: the Sirupati that went thru the nail is named "Rusty"? I don't think I'd better touch that.

JeffP: thank you very kindly for the "doves of war (ravens)" explanation. I have a MRL two hand Ravenna sword (45" blade, 59" OAL) that on being properly reground and fitted (the way it should have come to start with in the first place) will need a name.

Mohd: thank you for the explanation. In truth, the most important name for any of us is to be called "The Beloved" by "He who brings into being all things that are created." I'm sure you are fondly referred to that way and pray that you continue to be so blessed.

And Ghost, come to think of it, my 700 Safari Grade 458 should have been named "Tyson" for its propensity to slam me around and bite my ear. And regardless of name, Sanu's forward curving khuks have got to be specially treasured.

Yvsa: what about Indin names for weapons? And I mean the ones that can be used in polite company?

I think I may have mentioned before that in Nepal members of various clans generally have the clan name for a last name. Examples: Almost all Sherpas are named "something" Sherpa. Almost all Gurungs are named "something" Gurung. Limbus are named "something" Limbu. And so on. It makes for confusion but when you think about it not much more than people here named Jones or Smith.
