I found a charge on my checking account this morning that I didn't make. So i called the bank to see about it. Well, supposedly it had to have been a card with pin number purchase (so hopefully it will just fall off the screen when it can't clear).

But in the process of the phone call, I said that there wasn't any money in my account so I wouldn't have to worry about any more coming out, right???? NO!! They will allow your account to go overdrawn if you are a member in "good standing". I'm furious. I don't have a back up account there and that is just wrong in my opinion. Needless to say I'm having a talk with the banker on Tues. Do any of the rest of you know if your banks do the same thing? I know you can have like a savings and checking linked just for that reason, but I don't have that and always thought if the money wasn't there, then the card would not be approved. Never had the problem of overdrafting in 30 years, but don't want to start now. This is just weird.

Oh yes, they love nothing more than for you to make a mistake and let them charge huge fees. My bank does overdraft protection with a linked savings account, but will only make an overdraft transfer in increments of $50. Guess whose savings account had $49.50 when an overdraft transfer needed to be made? That was an expensive little mistake.

My 19 year-old son has the same name as me, plus "Junior." Last month he deposited a paycheck into his checking account - at least that was what he thought he did. He had written his checking account number on the deposit slip, so it was a reasonable assumption on his part anyway.

Within one week he received six bounced check notices from the bank. Each notice had an add-on charge, all of which totaled almost $300.00.

Turns out the bank erroneously deposited his money into my account instead of his. He went in and sat down with them and had them calculate what his balance would be if they had not made an error and added all those charges. They apologized and agreed to make things right by restoring his account to the balance he would have had if they'd not screwed up. I was ready to close all of my accounts had they done otherwise, but it still makes me wonder how many other people have been raked and not even realized that it wasn't their fault.

I had a similar infuriating incident. I had a membership to a health club. I quit the club according to correct procedure, but they kept drafting my credit card. I told the cc company to quit allowing the draft. They said that the merchant would have to sop the draft from their end.

I told the merchant to quit drafting the cc account and they said they would, but they did not. I even went so far as to close the cc account and they STILL kept piling up the charges and sedning me monthly bills.

SO I paid off the charges I thought legitimate and refused to pay the charges to the health club. It took over a year with threatening letters from the cc company that they would do ugly things to me if I did not pay and me reposnding that I was ready to meet these dipshits in Court any day they liked! AND if they screwed with my credit, I would take them to Court for a string of reasons.

Finally the cc company gave up and put a small blight on my credit. I was able to file a response with the credit bureaus about what they had done. I still have good credit, no one seemed to care who was continuing to grant me credit.

Dammned MasterCard!
