Saw it last night after forged in fire, needless to say, I was disappointed. I really was not impressed with the host, isn't he from the WWE? Although the different backgrounds of the contestants were interesting, especially those who made their own blades and those with martial arts background or chopping competition experience, but I kept thinking, could they have used the spine of the blade for some of the crushing breaking things and save the edge for the real cutting? What was the man with the small Bowie thinking?

I really did like the chopper the cowboy used to win. I would have liked to see a Busse in there too or some well known knives.

I thought the one that lady used looked like one of the Machinist's blades!! Good catch. The thing that did make sense to me was when there is a good knife, the techniques used to approach the tests became more important to get to the end with enough edge retention. I still do not know if slicing the chicken in half with one stroke is a good test, was the weight of the knife just pushing it away? Is that where the technique comes in to play?

I was super excited when I saw Travis! The show was a lot of fun. We had absolutely no idea what we were going to be facing. They guy that came with the short knife was an alternate that was pulled in a few days before as they juggled schedules. He said nobody told him the minimum blade length. And they did emphasize that "size won't matter". The chicken was definitely a skill cut. You needed to swing almost vertically with a little angle not to push it away. Same with the fish. Unfortunately, my goggles were fogged and I aimed to high and I missed the dang thing. My knife held up beautifully though. Wish they would have showed it. They have some kinks to work out, but I think that's because it is a new show. They left one of our contestants out of the episode all together. I would have been pretty disappointed had that happened to me. I think it will get better with time. I had no idea who Bill Goldberg was when I got there, but he was a really cool dude and really nice. The whole thing was a great experience!

My wife is a big Forged in Fire fan so we watch together. We watched Knife or Death last night and she can attest, I gasped and said "That's a Carothers!" when I saw your knife. :D

Always good to see familiar folks getting some air time ;).

Knife parameters given were for 10" blade or longer, and they wanted it to be a custom/handmade knife.
I was truly shocked at the number of broken knives.
The obstacles were tough on knives, but I truly did not expect to see blades breaking in half.
I'm even more excited for my episode to air now.

I thought it was also good

I like that it really is bringing performance custom blades to the forefront

I felt bad for the guy with the Bowie from Pakistan ...... I could see the result coming

That last guy with the Bowie???

I looked over to my wife and asked her "did he just say a custom from Pakistan?"

With that little blade he was doomed from the start, even if it wasn't a poor knife.

Knowing two of the competitors made it that much more interesting for Mrs.Big Chris and me.

If you ever made a dish like this, you should know chopping bones with the edge rather than crushing with the spine (or a hammer) is very much needed

Thanks everyone, I hope it gets better as they work it out. I see the point of having a sharp edge for slicing the chicken and fish bones, I was referring to using the spine for the pots of sand or the box. I also thought I recognized the guy who tested their blades before they started.

I have been waiting for this show to air. It was fun to watch; it was a bit disappointing when two knives actually broke. I cannot see any excuse for that to happen, when you expect only real pros to be the competitors. I'm waiting for Big Chris to get there...he has his work cut out for him.

We had no idea what we were up against and were told there would not be any destructive testing. I loved that there was a mix of experts from different fields coming together to match skills. I learned a lot. I wasn't concerned about my blade construction, but I was fortunate to learn a lot that I didn't know about welding a blade. I would love to do it again. I think it was originally meant to just be forgers, but the mix of skillsets was just a really cool thing to be a part of and didn't necessarily come across in the show. Forged in Fire also started out a little rough around the edges. I think once they find their groove this is going to be awesome!

I was keen seeing you on there Jo, very cool, sad to see the chicken thing though.

My take, for what it's worth, they amp up the drama and the commentary, but as Jo stated, Forged in Fire also had a learning curve to get through, I hope if they continue it will be a bit better laid out and not so dramatic.
Felt bad for the sword guy, watching him step on his blade to bend it back was heart breaking.

And Travis, he is a fun dude to watch, liked him in his appearances on FiF, thought it was funny his sign on his shop door that said "Come back with a Warrant" or something along those lines ;)

It was like watching American Ninja Warrior
with a Monster Garage announcer.(Goldberg)

Annoying.

They need to just tell contestants to bring a
Sword
or
Knife.
Keep it simple stupid

I didn't mean to come on so strong...I'm sorry that you guys were misinformed. Many of the tasks were based on destructive testing, in my view. That ice-chop has to be terrible on a blade edge. It was heart-breaking, and very surprising, to see knives break in half.
Perhaps the greatest surprise was that darned chicken... apparently VERY difficult to do...since the thing is so light that it won't hold still long enuf to cut it.
I also some very professional knife-wielding there...
As has been said, it's a new show; it's rough around the edges; it will get better... I just felt so sorry for all of the bad things that happened to the contestants.
Gotta be a adrenalin rush to be a contestant...wish I coulda been there.
