It's a bad feeling isn't it? Here's a couple of stories from back when I was in the service.

I was stationed at USCG Commsta Kodiak back in the mid-80s and our watch section had about a dozen people in it. One of the guys came up with a great idea - we'd all chip in and he'd buy some nice steaks and we'd have a nice barbecue on one of our midwatches. We put up enough to get a nice porterhouse for each person, plus a bag of taters. Well, the night came and he showed up with some cheap ass round steak. He said he bought cheaper steak "so we can do it twice". We never did have that 2nd steak night.

The other story was also at Kodiak. It was fairly common for watch sections to get together on libo time to have a barbecue or a party once in a while. Our new Chief announced he would have a pot luck at his house. Everybody showed up and we were all having a really great time when all of a sudden the Chief asked for everybody's attention and informed us that he was a member of the Bahai faith and would like to share his faith with us. He then put a Bahai video in the VCR and showed it to us. Stopped the party dead in it's tracks. We'd all been rooked and we knew it. As soon as the tape was over, everybody made their excuses and left, not without a little embarrassment on the behalf of all involved.

The point is, either of these episodes could have been warm memories, but now they're just cold regrets for the times I'd been ROOKED.

My boss got sucked into "Team National" by one of the the company's primary clients. "Team National" is the new Amway. The boss wishes the client would just demand a simple kickback instead - the videos and schpeels are too much.
