I still made out pretty well I think.

I would have loved to go to Blade this year, mostly just to meet a lot of the people I have "met" in the forums, but it wasn't meant to be. Next year though for sure.

However, one doesn't have to go to Blade to score. :)

I recently traded into 2 knives that I wanted to share.

First up is what promises (should be here today!) to be a gorgeous bowie by another 2005 Blade Show absentee, Nick Wheeler. I believe that the 2 best non-ranked (yet) smiths right now are Nick, and of course Don Hanson. :) Each consistantly turns out some of the finest forged work I have ever seen, by anybody, regardless of any initials that follow their name. I have been disappointed several times with knives by well regarded Mastersmiths, I have yet to be disappointed by anything from Nick or Don.

I once had a 9" ironwood fighter/bowie of Nicks, it was amazing, I regretfully say "was" because I foolishy sold it last year, but, I made amends with this new one I think. This new bowie of Nicks is 7" of forged modified "W" and ladder pattern damascus, it's kind of like a "W" pattern that is arranged in a ladder pattern, very neat stuff, the S-guard is vividly, heat blued twist damascus, as is the ferrule, buttcap and finial. The handle is what looks to be killer Sambar stag, and if I know Nick's workmanship, it will be flawless. Nick told me that Jerry Fisk saw this knife and told him, and I'm paraphrasing: "You did good Bubba". :) Any time Jerry calls you Bubba, you know you did well. :) I just hope he didn't coon finger it too much... :)

Here are Blade Gallery's pics of it, I hope to get a chance to take some of my own in the next week or 2, time, and baby, permitting...

Last but not least is a TnT I have been after for a long time, #10 of the 20 that Tom made to celebrate his 20th year of knifemaking. This TnT has a 4.25" blade of 3/16" thick Talonite, flawlessly, hand satin finished, a perfectly ground bowie blade and the action, lockup, ball detent and the wide, gleaming edge on this knife could not be better, not all TnTs are equal, some turn out better than others, this is true of all customs in my experience, this particular TnT is functonally maybe the best one I have ever seen, and that's saying something since even a bad one is better than many maker's best. If I ever sell this one, somebody please kill me, I'll deserve it. (Pics by Jon Ukman)
