Diff. between s30 and 42 steel Sebenzas

I'm not sure if early production S30V blades were marked, but I'm pretty sure the new production sebbies are.

When I asked CRK about how to tell the difference between BG42 and ATS34, they said I would have to cut the blades in half, melt them down and then do a analysis of the components. I decided against it. Regardless, you can't go wrong with any of the blade choices. My ATS34 is still going strong. You might want to contact CRK?

arent the handles stamped inside?

perhaps from the date you can give us a better idea!

this way CRK or a knife knut can give you " mo info"

I think I can see "00" stamped inside the handle. So that would be made in 2000 which would make it a BG-42, correct?

Take it apart and if there is a S near the pivot hole on the blade it's S30V, if not it's ATS or 42.

later,

Oily

Try and sharpen it. If it fights you, it is S30V. If it fights you a lot, it is BG42. LOL! :D

Does it mean that Bg-42 has better wear resistance? It's heat treated higher than S30V..

Thanks for the replies, its sitting in a store for $280, and I really want the BG-42 blade

I'm far from a steel expert, but I believe BG-42 is more wear resistant than S30V.

S30V is pretty much a universial compromise. Not too bad to sharpen, not too bad on edge holding, pretty corrosion resistant, pretty tough. All and all, S30V is a great steel for an everyday knife, I just like the sicking edge on my BG42 Sebbie.

thanks, I think CRK should offer a possibility of choosing other steels, like Bg42, as many customers demand.

The choice of steels would be nice, but S30V seems to be the choice of many ,many users. Dennis Wright told me once that many people had passed up the BG42 small Sebenzas in favor of the S30V ones. I also know he had 2 Umfaans on his shelf for about 3 years and they both went in a 2 week period.
As i've said many times before the My S30 V samll Classic gets sharpened 2-3 times more than my Large Plain. And the umfaan was used 2 months before I sharpened it.
