Is there any noticeable difference between plain 1095 and 1095 Cro-van steel? I heard it is more corrosion resistant but I do not know if that is true.

In the amounts used in 1095 Cro Van, Chromium improves the uniformity of heat treatment and Vanadium is said to produce a finer grain size. A finer grain size should improve the toughness at a given strength. That is, you could get a steel to a somewhat higher hardness without having as great an impact on toughness.

Neither corrosion resistance nor wear resistance would be affected.

I don't have enough experience with 1096 Cro Van to tell you if the differences are noticeable in the field.

and one to grow on?

Hah! busted on my typo. Good catch!
