I am looking at my next purchase and was wondering the difference between the two. I have natural stag calf roper that I really like and saw the 68 buckaroo stag. Please enlighten me.

The 66 frame is a serpentine shape meaning that it has a slight bend in it. The 68 frame is straight.

I don't think so. I have a 68 on the way but I sold the one I used to have. No half stops if I remember correctly.

No Half Stops on the 681312 Natural Stag Buckaroo. No half stops on the Stainless White Owl either.

The length and the blade selection seem to be identical. The serpentine is slight enough that it shouldn't make a big difference either. I have a couple of the #66 Calf Ropers, which do NOT have half-stops (my preference). I really don't see any reason to add the #68 Buckaroo, unless a REALLY great deal would come along, they just seem too redundant.

They have so many 3-1/2" knives, that I wish they had made the #68 pattern a 3-7/8 incher. Then adding a Buckaroo would be adding a whole 'nuther class of knife, with stockman at 3-1/2", 3-7/8" and the Cuban at 4-1/8 inches.

I couldn't agree more Jeff. A 3 7/8 frame is at the top of my wishlist. The 66 is a great small frame knife and the 53 is a great big frame knife. Put something right in the middle and it would be just right :D

The 62 Maverick is 3 3/4 inches.

I kind of agree that the Buckaroos are redundant. I like them but they are so close to the Calf Ropers that I won't get one. I do like the Calf Ropers a little better. I find the serpentine curve slightly more attractive.

With their cigar like shape, I consider the 68's a smaller version of the 53 Cubans which I think is a good thing. I hope to enjoy the 440C White Owl that I'll be getting soon.

Rma100, I also have a Maverick, and it's a nice knife. But the congress style frame limits the blade length to such an extent that it's clip main is 2.42" from bolster to tip, which is actually shorter than the much smaller and more pocketable Calf Roper's clip main, at 2.52 inches.

After handling one I returned it. The congress frame(at least the pinched bolster version) did not feel good in my hand. I would prefer a serpentine or cigar frame shape in that size. The Maverick was a great idea, just not a good fit for me. I also have the 79 which is 3 3/4 and like it a great deal. I miss my 66 stockman for weekend carry, if I feel inclined I may try a Buckaroo next but who knows ;)

That's why there are so many different patterns. So many different tastes in a knife.

Does anyone else keep scrolling to that primitive bone calf roper? What a nice knife.

My underline addded to the quote:

Unless you want both a stock knife (#66 Calf Roper) and a cattle knife (#68 Buckaroo) on the same length frame.

That's why I intend to pick up a couple #68 Buckaroos - to go along with my #66 Calf Ropers. Haven't decidd whether or not to get the "premium" version of the #68 Buckaroos yet. Probably not - most likely just the hohum, standard ebony and bone.

Won't be any Ebony I don't think. The Tidioute Buckaroo is Blood Wood. Might be a SFO I haven't heard about. Tidioute Bone is Purple Sage and the Northfield Bone is Forest Green.

Yeah, I was thinking that but if you'll notice, GEC cut the Buckaroo off on 31 Dec 2012 I'd guess to have a clean break for their production tables for 2012. I'd expect them to continue the release of the Buckaroos in 2013 and who knows for sure what will be the cover choices for those knives.
