I've noticed that a few of the guys are putting together survival kits and calling them "bugout bags". I think we're missing the point. These two kits complement each other and will have items which fit into either category, but we're missing the point.

The Bugout Bag... consists of items you need to evacuate your current location without picking up additional items from locations that may or may not be accessable. Your goal is not to survive in the wild, but to travel to one of a few predetermined "safe" destinations. Although each bugout bag will contain different items dictated by climate, infrastructure and locations, certain items will remain crucial.

Identification... drivers licenses, assorted licenses and Passport

Currency... Cash, Credit cards, phone cards, frequent flyer miles and prepurchased transportation fares. Do not depend upon just one means.

Communications... Cellphones, amateur radio, am/fm radio

Information... Maps (marked with roads, transportation hubs airports ect.), bus schedules, train schedules, respective fares and the like. A compass and/or GPS to help you use the map

Clothing and Food... A change of clothing, rain gear and comfortable shoes. One might have a long walk to bug out. Food and water might not be readily accessable. Add smokes and medication. Only enough food to sustain travel is enough.

Tools... small knife, tool kit, flashlight... for those unexpected situations... A firearm may be added, dictated by personal discretion. Remember that tools and firearms may sometimes require disposal before boarding ships, trains, buses and airplanes.

Remember that the bugout bag is for working with the existing infrastructure to evacuate. You want to drive, or ride to safety, not run off into the woods to carve out a primitive existance.

Of course, if hiding out in the wilderness is your goal, or a long hike to safety is required, then a survival kit along with your bugout bag will be a nice addition.

Good post. You've hit on exactly how BOBs should be used. There definitely is a distinction between the BOB and the survival kit, though some might take issue with the BOB not being a wilderness oriented item. While I think that one should only 'bug-out' to a known and pre-prepared location, I would contend that many BOBs are packed specifically for sustaining an extended wilderness stay. The sad truth is that many people have this vague notion that they can just leave the house laden with weapons and ammunition and a 60 lb BOB and 'live off the land' indefinitely. What happens when the thousands of others show up thinking the same thing, no one seems to mention. I agree that BOB's SHOULD be as you've described, but I think that the common usage of the term is broader and less focussed.

My 'BOB' is what I take for a weekend of camping, and is always packed so I know I can leave the house for whatever reason for several days and have the basics with me, urban or wilderness.

The funny thing... here in NYC, you've got about fifty miles of heavy urban areas in any direction, then another hundred miles of surburban area, which then connect with other metropolitan areas... realistically, you're going to be within a few miles of civilization at all times. Survival is not necessarily living in the woods, but to transition between the two when necessary.

Great post. I think I need to re-evaluate my needs. (And maybe lighten the load?) I think we (OK, maybe it's just me.) tend to get too wrapped up in the gadget factor. Truthfully, I got along fine with a sharp pocketknife, a small flashlight, and a lighter for many years. Then the internet showed me that I really need to pack 50 pounds of gear where ever I go.

Sometimes, simpler is better.

I keep a "survival kit" in each "bug out bag". As well as some other places.
