Is there a difference or is the FRN Harpy just called Merlin?

culter,

The FRN Harpy and the Merlin are the same knife.

Mike

Hi Culter. Actually, they are not the same knife. (Sorry, Mike).

The Harpy has a 3mm thick blade and a handle shape similar to the Pro-Grip and Worker models.

The Merlin used the Delica handle and has a 2.5mm thick blade.

There is not really an "FRN Harpy".

Sal, thanks for clearing this up. But then the FRN Harpy I ordered must be a Merlin. That's good I like that name better anyway.

Sal,

I definitely know the difference between the Harpy and the Merlin (we've had a few discussions on these knives), but I have seen a few big dealers and users referring to the Merlin as the FRN Harpy, and at one point thought Spyderco was thinking of calling it the Harpy lightweight. While we're on the subject, any chance of bringing back the G-10 Harpy? This is/was the best "user" version of this outstanding utility knife. Robust construction with a great gripping surface.

I have to agree with Mike on the G-10 Harpy. I traded my last one away to a friend, and now find myself ordering another on ebay just to have for daily use. If not a possibility, how about roughing up the stainless scales with texture of some sort? Maybe checkering or stippling or the like?

I agree with Mike and Hawkbill. I just started using a harpy for my keychain knife. I used a cricket for six years and it was hard to give up. This harpy is amazing in its cutting ability and the way it locks up rock solid. I love it! Now my merlin as most frn knives go started out smooth but now drags when opening. I've had enduras and delicas go the same route and I wish I knew what to do to remedy this problem.

Hi Mike. Yes, I know you know the differences. I wanted to clear up some of Culter's confusion.

Sorry on the G10 Harpy. I built the model because I felt the same way you did. However, sales did not do well. That's why we had to close them out. Most of you bought one at the close out price. Would you have paid 2 or 3 times as much?

Sal:
You are correct about the price-issue from my prospective. Maybe it's just me, but paying $85 for a little knife is harder to justify in my mind than buying a medium-sized knife for $95 (hence the whole tactical market).
Build a G-10 super-sized Harpy with a blade closer to that of 3 3/4", and you will have something folks might open their hearts and wallets to.
