Hi Everybody,

Canvas micarta is very much stronger than linen micarta which is stronger than paper micarta. Does this imply that paper micarta is weak? How long will it last and how much punishment can it take? I have read of paper micarta aging... what does this mean?

Thanks in advance.

None are 'weak' in that sense, it's more of how it wears. It takes a lot to wear even paper micarta down, but it will wear faster than linen which will wear faster than canvas. I have a MS in quilted something (linen?) where the points are worn smooth. This took more than a few years of EDC and handling. It's getting a touch up in a blast cabinet to get some 'sticky' back and knock some of the laquer (from hand oils) off. Should be good for another 7 or 8 years till the next blast.

I like paper or linen for EDC cause the handle is usually against my skin. For a full blown chopper or field knife, canvas is the way to go. It's much rougher and tougher. I have all 3 and all 3 have their place in the scheme of things.

i'm sure glad that you jumped on this thread!!

the only way i have disrupted micarta was to take it past 300 degrees in the oven....

regardless of what anybody says don't stand in a fire hotter than 275

no $hit!!!

I would agree that none of the micartas are weak, however, if you want extreme durability stick to canvas and linen micarta.

I hope that helps

:D:D

If you get to look at examples it is easy to tell. Paper is smooth because...well...paper has no texture really. With the "fabric" micarta's you can see the difference in the thread size and knit if you will.

I should have qualified that paper is capable of having the smoothest look. I presume it could be left in a rough condition. I still dont' think it would have as much of a stratified look like linen and canvas. Ahhhhh...what do I know. :footinmou

think of micarta as you would plywood

it is impregnated layers of matierial layed up to form a solid mass of ****

paper has more sheets of paper per inch than linen

linen more than canvas

like a laminated stock on a varmint rifle

become one with the universe

shoot 1911's

mmmmmmmmmmmm....

eat yogart

Thanks for the info, guys!

I must stay, I've never seen a 1911 and yogurt being discussed in a thread about knife handles!
