Difference between S30V and CPMS30V

Got a few Wal-Mart gift cards for Christmas from various family members, so I put them together and picked up a Spyderco Native (plain edge) there for $40.00 plus tax. On the blade, the steel is said to be CPMS30V. I was wondering if this is different from regular S30V? I assume the CPM means something. Any education from any of you on this? By the way, I'm really liking this knife. It's got one of the most comfortable handles I've ever held.

The CPM stands for Crucible Particle Metallurgy (spelling?) It's a process that Crucible steel uses to improve the steel's properties. As far as I know, there is no non-CPM S30V.

Thanks for the enlightenment.
So is Crucible Steel the only manufacturer for S30V?

The CPM technique is relatively new and allows precise composition control, finer grain and compositions that were previously not possible. So it allowed to make steels that were previously not really possible. One of those steels is S30V which is why it doesn't need the addition CPM. But with this technique already existing steels can be improved, so now there is to D2 the CPM D2 and to the 154CM the CPM154 and to the ATS-34 the RWL34. S30V is proprietary so, yes, only Crucible is the only source.

The CPM process has been around for 35 years !! Hardly something new.

I was almost sure, someone would point that out. I wasn't sure though if if would be you or Larrin :).

Well crucible steels have been around for, how long? New depends on the frame of reference :D. Considering, how long steel has been around, CPM steel are a pretty recent development? Also the CPM versions of the some of the tool steels are pretty recent as well, or do I have that wrong? I know, sometimes I am pretty far of on that one as well, because the steels take their time to enter the knife world. ZDP-189 is AFAIK, not exactly a "new" steel either, even though it is new as a blade steel.

CPM steels have been around since before Al Gore invented the Internet !!!! Often technology moves a lot faster than we are comfortable with !
