Difference between Victorinox and Wenger?

What's the difference between the two?

I see they both have mostly the same knives.

Same company or?

(Sorry for the noob question, I've never had a SAK so I don't know much about them)

Oh, so now they just produce slightly different knives under the same name, just different branding?

Not much overlap now-- knives are no longer being produced under the Wenger brand. All the Wenger knives that survive are now being retailed under the Victorinox Delemont brand. Wenger is now manufacturing only watches, luggage, office equipment and so on.

If my info is correct, Vic, bought Wenger back in 2005.

I own both Wenger Standard Issue and Victorinx Soldier (Alox model) knives. From what I can tell, they are the same basic knife, manufactured with the same grade of steel with only a few minor differences. The biggest being the bail sometimes found on the Wenger SI.

Years ago I started hearing rumors that the quality control on Wenger knives is not up to snuff when compared to Victorinox. I have not found that to be the case with those that I own.

Then Victorinox shutdown Wenger knife manufacturing earlier this year. Some of the Wenger knives are now made and sold as the Victorinox Delemont Collection.

I liked the old Wenger knives; smaller size, good tools esp. the pliers. Now
all the "Delemont" Victorinox have those &*%$ Evo grip handles which I
really dislike. Won't be buying any of those.

If this thread doesn't close first, I'll try to post pics of an older Wenger in a leather sheath...the scales appear of different material and, if memory serves, the blades etc. are carbon, not stainless.

Gotta go rummage in the storage & find it. wlw

I found it...and obviously memory serves me NOT: I believe INOX means Stainless.

The words SWISS MADE appear under DELEMONT; that blade is 2-11/16". OA length is ~6-3/4" with either bale or saw open.

That saw is Viciously Sharp; the other blades are just sharp.

The scales look like Micarta (paper?), and show minor wear; the rest of the knife appears un-used.

The symbol that crosses WENGERINOX looks like a crossbow. Is it?

The sheath has a belt loop, and fits the folded knife like it's original to it.

I thought it odd that the snap cover was painted.

Is this folder unusual in blade inventory, or otherwise uncommon? Can anyone put a date to it, or any history?

Thanks! wlw

If they were bought in 05 it makes me wonder how long some of the clearance marked ones i picked up recently were sitting around. They are marked as wenger on the clamshell

The Wenger brand was maintained completely separately until this past year. They weren't integrated at all until 2014, they were pretty much run as separate companies.

I think the OP's question was answered in terms of the companies. As far as the SAK's they produce there are subtle differences, much like Coke and Pepsi. The can openers are different, as are the scissors, and the size of their SAK's are also different. SAK Wiki has all the information you will ever need on both companies and their knives. Personally I have always preferred Victorinox.
