What is the difference between black or tan canvas, black paper and G10 handles? Is one more durable than the other?

Going to order a TGLB and not sure what handle to go with? Also are the blade finishes all the same just different colors?

Thanks

I am no Busse expert but I believe all the coating are crinkle coat just in different colors. As far as the handle material, personal preference.

My Tops Firestrike 45 has Mircata and I love it, my Busse TGLB has Orange and Black G-10 and I love it. The Micarta feels slightly softer to the touch but both are premium handle material and you can't go wrong with either.

In theory yes, the 10 is stronger than the canvas which is stronger than the black paper.

Busse has a lifetime warranty so get what you like.

This is one where you can probably just pick the one you like the best and know it will be a good material. The differences in the various types of Micarta and G10 are pretty small from a functionality stand point. Anything anyone might rationally do to a knife handle will be easily absorbed by any of them. Irrational stuff...well, that's another matter. Some folks claim canvas Micarta can absorb fluids like blood, however I have never noticed that to be the case, and they seem to clean off just fine if they are well made. I have handles made from both from different makers and they are all complete serviceable. It pretty much comes down to how the handle fits your hand and how you want it to look more than if it's made from Micarta or G10.

I like the feel of micarta best. If you have a chance to hold each in your hand I think you will know pretty quickly which works for you.

I like G10 best myself. It is hard to tell the difference between black paper and black G10 by looks.

I like the feel of the G10 better as well, but I'd say it's mostly just a visual prefrence, I've never heard of any of the materials breaking.

I really like G10 looks, feel, but the canvas has a warm feel to it. So like its been said, it's kinda a personal decision. I don't think you can go wrong either way, I have both myself.

In addition to what has been said already: Paper and Micarta handles absorb fluids. Gives you a better grip in wet conditions compared to G-10. However, it makes them less hygienic and they'll discolorate (darken) by time from sweat, oil, blood or whatever they're exposed to.

I personally prefer micarta.

Micarta is epoxy bonded how does it absorb fluids?

Correct. The Micarta itself does not absorb fluids. However, because it's made of layers of fabric, the exposed fibers on the surface level do soak up moisture. You should be able to tell the difference when working with wet hands.

G 1o feels like really hard plastic,Micarta feels more like cloth or canvas ,paper feels like g 10 but is not as heavy.g 10 is the heaviest.I personally like the G rexed custom handles, they look and feel Great.the micarta on them is smoothed and epoxied on the outside so they wont absorb fluid, and then you can get a wide variety of other materials for the other layer.hope that helps.

Oh yeah,Blade finishes.I've owned black, moss green, sand, tan, sage, and satin.I would have to say black and moss green took longer to wear down. But satin looks the best and doesn't wear off.I would go all out and get satin if I was you.You only live once!

In addition to what everyone else said, G10 is heavier than micarta. I doubt it would make much of a difference on a knife the size of a TGLB, but it was really noticeable on a Swamp Rat Waki.

Dude, you can't get a satin TGLB, comp finish use to be available but it has been discontinued.:(
The CF do pop up on the exchange however, but usually at a higher price. There is one on the auction site that must not be named for $3,500:D

The old black blade coating was smooth, as is the current jungle green coating. I personally prefer these smooth finishes, but it seems like they wear more quickly.

The weight of the different handle materials can shift the balance point. This is more apparent on the smaller knives.
