Is there a difference in the diamond pastes available? Norton seems a little cheaper than DMT. What about "lapidary compounds"?

Cheaper is not the way to go with diamond paste, it is an example of you get what you pay for! I use the DMT paste, which works quite well. A little goes a long way, so a small amount will last you a long time.

And you can find "lapidary paste" at local craft stores. So I'm just wondering the difference.

Often the pastes come in different concentrations, ie. the amount of actual diamond grit to carrier ratio. Not every 1 oz. container gas the same amount of diamond in it.

You also have oil based and water based. DMT is an example of oil based low to medium concentration diamond paste. Handamerican spray is a known water based product with high concentration of abrasive (it goes by the carat weight). You also have a multitude of products from Ken Schwartz which I believe are mostly water based high concentration compounds, rather expensive though.
