Difference In quality between older and newer rat 1?

A few years ago, I picked up the Ontario rat 1 folder with the glass reinforced nylon (?) handles and the Aus 8 blade. This model had the Randall's adventure training insignia on the blade and clip. It is not assisted and it is so smooth. Smoother than my Spyderco paramilitary 2. And even my southard. So I picked up a newer one, this one having the Ontario logo on the blade and clip. Maybe I got a defect, but this one was not centered out of the box, I tried slicing through paper with it just to get the edge and instead of slicing, it started to tear through it, and it's not as smooth as my other one. I remember what my first rat was like out of the box so i understand I have to break it in. I was just wondering if the QC has gone down. I bought mine brand new from the website.

That sounds more like an issue with that specific knife. I gave a reviewer a RAT folder recently and he cut the end of his thumb off without ever noticing (even after the fact), so it's fair to say they are sharp. knifesales@ontarioknife.com can get you a replacement. Our quality control has actually been a major area of focus for the past couple of years, and that department has been expanded to include more people, more resources, and more expertise. Sadly, there's just no way to catch everything.

Not that this matters much but when I received my Rat 1 it scared me how sharp it was. It was sharper than any Benchmade or Spyderco from the factory and blew my sebenza out of the water. It was so sharp I was actually relieved when it dulled down a bit because it was a freaking guillotine. You know how smooth the Rat is opening, and about 15% before its locked into the open position on most smooth knives you can usually push on the edge of the blade with your finger and instead of cutting you it will open the blade the remainder of the way? Well I can with all my knives, but I swear if I tried that with my Rat it would not budge and would definitely cut deep into my finger. Not overhyping this in the slightest!

Every Rat I I've bought, whether new or old, has been perfect. I have just north of 10 of them and they all blow my other knives out of the water.

I just received another new Rat 1 yesterday. After carrying and using it today I can find nothing at all wrong with it. It opens smooth, locks up tight, and very sharp. How sharp? Sharp enough to require a band aid after a slip while shaving my arm. Good stuff OKC.

Speaking of quality control! Good on you Ontario, I love my RAT, but even better to see you right on top of an issue a customer has. This is way after the fact that I'm seeing it, but huge bonus points with a current customer, with me at least. Super refreshing to see that kinda QC
