Hello, Spyderfreaks.

There has been such a huge ballyhoo about many of you desiring to own such a knife, I had to ask myself, "self, Is there really a difference?" So, I'd like to know. BTW I love the regular knife, and if there's a good reason to own the Chinese version, I'd like to do so. So, thanks

I'm not sure I understand the question, but the Bob Lum Tanto is a completely different knife from the Bob Lum Chinese Utility folder.

The Tanto has a blade of ATS-55, the CU has a blade of VG-10. The Tanto has a titanium handle (G10 is coming soon), the CU is Almite-coated aluminum. The CU is also a smaller knife than the Tanto. The blade on the CU is flat ground, while the Tanto's is hollow ground.

Does that answer your question?

no.
my question refers to a knife identical or nearly identical to the tanto blade w/ titanium handle, but has some chinese printing on it, in red, I believe. I think this may have been a pre-production knife, but I might be wrong.
thanks for your help.

Are you comparing Bobs handmade version with the current Spyderco collaboration one?

Nanko 2,
I have NO IDEA. Maybe I am, you'll have to tell me. I saw a knife that was EXACTLY the same in shape (and probably size) with the round hole and everything, with some red and black chinese printing on it. And I saw it right here, in this forum. This was a long time ago. about 6 months, maybe, so my memory might be a little foggy, and I might be making up some stuff, but I don't think so. It looked exactly like the one I have now, made by spyderco, but just a little different (mine is plain)

thanks, Ed

BTTT....

If anyone knows of site where I might be able to view similar style Lum knives let me know. thanks.

Hi Pergatory. I think thiere might be some confusion as to the question?

Bob Lum designed a folding "tanto" style blade. Spyderco produced the model with a titanium handle (as the opriginal prototype). The Chinese lettering on the blade is Bob Lum's Signature.

We will be making the same model with a G10 handle for 2001.

Bob Lum also designed a knife he calls the "Chinese Folder". Spyderco is producing that model (with the green handle shown above). It also has the same Chinese signature on the blade. It will begin shipping to ELU early December.

The quality of both models is about the same. The newer versions will have eccentric pivots and offset arc ramps.

hope that helps.

YES I think that the first pics. I saw of the tanto must have been that prototype.

thanks Sal!!!

So the Chinese folder will have the new lock?? or a future model?? Anyone know?? I'm sure we already discussed it, but I forgot.

Blades,

The Chinese Folder has a liner lock with an eccentric pivot and offset arc ramp like the Military.

Don't worry that the world might end tomorrow....in Australia it's tomorrow already.

Thanks Clay. I thought it was suppose to, but wanted to be sure. I knew we were waiting for something extra on the Chinese Folder or we could have had it last year. I have bugged my local Spyderco dealer three times in the last two weeks.(twice in person, once by email) I almost bought a used Commander today, but I'm waiting for my Chinese Folder.

I WANT MY CHINESE FOLDER!!!!
