Difference in steels

I just ordered a Salt-1. It has the H-1 steel, as I'm sure everybody knows. Can anybody tell me, if there will be any difference in that, and one of my Vg-10 knives? Thanks guys

VG-10 will hold an edge much longer than H1 but H1 is much much more corrosion resistant so you will never have to worry about rust unless you maybe leave it in a bucket of salt lol. VG-10 makes for a better EDC steel in normal conditions but if you are in an area with a lot more moisture ie fishing, boating or even just a coastal city than H1 will be better suited for EDC

I would agree with everything Blade-fiend said but much longer edge holding. Also keep in mind that a serrated H1 will hold an edge longer than non-serrated H1, and serrated H1 will hold an edge longer than a lot of other serrated steels including serrated VG-10. I have never seen a spot of rust on VG-10 personally. H1 will not rust, it is chemacally impossible. Unless you did some diving or was in a lot of contact with salt water, VG-10m would probably be fine. Check out Ankerson's data on edge retention. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...based-on-Edge-Retention-cutting-5-8-quot-rope

H-1 will not rust even if left in a bucket of salt :p Neither will the rest of the knife, it's engineered to be completely rustproof. H-1 has very low wear resistance due to the lack of carbides, however it has an unusual trait of hardening at the edge when serrated such that it can even perform better than s90V. It's an incredibly tough steel, and probably works best with a refined but coarse edge.

It does have .15% carbon in it, I think that's enough to bump it from "iron alloy" to "yeah that's steel alright".
