Differences in Commanders from 98 to 2000?

I saw a post elsewhere in this forum from Don, talking about how he'd prefer to see the Cmdr. go back to the 98 style.
I've got the 2000 model, (the liner lock works fine thanks.) and I was just curious as to what changes the Cmdr. has gone through since 98?

Hey Ken, I'm beat, but I'll try to give you as complete an answer as I can. Guys if I miss anything, help a brother out.

The '98 Commanaders were the First Generation. (point of reference only)

In mid 1999 EKI made several changes to the Commander line:

  • *Thinned the liners a hair
    *Thinner the scales
*Added a second detent to the non-lock liner side
*Changed to point grind to keep more blade thickness out toward the point
*Changed from water cutting the blades to laser cutting
*Serrated the liners (traction grooves) behind the thumb ramp

In late 2000, the blade grind seems to have gone back to the original style.

Most of the changes have been well recieved. However, the overall thinning of the body has met with some . . . grumbling. I too prefer the thicker feel of the First Generation Commanders and would like to see the "widened". ("Wider is better!") I would be willing to put money down that the change was made in the first place to satify customer requests.

Simply making the scales thicker would bring back that "handful" feeling.

Thanks John!
Although I wouldn't have minded a bit if you'd waited until you got up in the morning.

My EDC before the Cmdr was a very old AFCK, so this feels like quite a handfull to me as is. I was amazed when I took it out of the box and felt it's weight the first time, but I can get behind the "wider is better" idea too.
It's also nice, after years of BM knives to find that it's possible to put a good temper on an ATS-34 blade. Nice to have a SHARP knife again.
