Differences in Spydie Paramilitary

I received a paramilitary in the passaround and was immediately impressed with it. So much so that I searched one out and got it. The first owner didn't like black clips so he did a nice job of beadblasting it. I prefer black clips tho. So I guess I'll have to get one from Spydie :)
Well my Son enters tha Air Force soon and I wanted to send him off with one so I traded for another. Brand spankin new. Thanks John!!
The new one came today and there is a distinct change in the standoff thickness, lock plate thickness and length as well as a swedge on the "older" one at the choil.
For reference purposes the "older" one is the silver clip. Marked CD on the box
The new one is the black clip marked GD on the box.
Looks like there's definitely a beef up of the lock mechanism on the new one.
Both have centered blade, positive lockup, no blade play.
Differences
old: thicker standoffs, thinner lock plate and shorter also. G10 seems less deep than the new. Tho it could just be my imagination.
There's a cutout on the choil of the blade where cpm S30v is stamped.

I wonder why??
Anyone with info to share??

Because I'm one armed I don't have any user experiences with torque loosening the lock, etc.

Tom,mine is marked GD on the box and looks like the one with the bead blasted clip in your pic.Spyderco continuously makes improvements on their knives and this must be one of them??tom.

Ah well, Tom...that GD just makes me more confused now...
Tho maybe not only now..
Hahahaha

Thank you Tom
Any other observations?
Tom also :)

Does the new one have the ball detent at the lock? That would explain the absence of the cutout in the finger choil. Or maybe they just wanted to prevent accidental opening.

hmmm, ball detent... I don't know anything about this.
(scratches head...)
And I don't have the new one anymore to check..
I sent it off as trade for a mini commander.
Had the new one a total of <20 hours.
Like I always say..
I don't own anything..I lease it.

Deputy Tom, yours have a ball detent??
Tom

Dialex, Ball detent on a Compression Lock!?

That's a new one... where would they put it? It's kind of cramped in there already.

Albeit that would be ultra-cool... the "cutout" style closing detent on the CL was its weakest point. Barely held the thing closed, even with extra lockbar tension.

How strange... you're right...without the cutout, it wouldn't stay closed.

I'm looking at it with a magnifying glass but can't see one(very tight tollerences). The blade does suck closed and snick so I'm guessing there is a ball detent.tom.

Checking the Internet, I find several for sale. Two are particularly interesting. Both are labeled "C81GP." Focusing on the choil area, one picture looks like the one above with shiny clip ("old") and one looks like the one above with the black clip. Hmmm. Guess you have to call and ask what's on the box.

The cut out in the choil was shorted on the 2nd run. It's still there and holds the blade closed, it's just not visible.

The change to the lock release area was also another improvement. CQI is one of the areas where Spyderco is different from others.

So how do we tell which one we're buying?

CD? GD?
Just wondering so I can look for the newest one on my quest to find one cheap :)

Sal,

Very encouraging to hear it -- one of many reasons I buy Spyderco.

So... about that grey meltdown Lil' T and the black Yojimbo... ;)

I think you're pretty unlikely to find one of the older ones. Even my collectors club #'ed Para PE is the new style. While my SE was the old style. The change happened pretty early in production.
