Okay I was browsing the Great World Wide Web, and i ran across a custom knife maker who made a blade out of carbon fiber and had g10 handles. Now, would that actually be useful? or is it just to look at and be fragile? He made one from carbon fiber that didn't have a woven pattern on it and it actually looked really really great.. I thought it was kind of a cool idea. He also had a blade that had an edge impregnated with tungsten carbide, which I really wish i knew how he did...

So i got a question for you folks, What are some of the strangest materials have you seen used as a knife blade? Secondly Whats your favorite type of metal for a knife?

What exactly all could be used for a sturdy enough blade? INFORM ME ALL YOU KNOW PLEASE!! because searching is a shot in the dark.

Some im aware of (Other than Stainless, A2, Damascus, Etc.)
Ceramic
Carbon Fiber
Knapped obsidian, Jasper, and Agate
and thats all i can think of....

So come on people Theres gotta be a TON more and I would LOVE some ideas for some of my artsy novelty blades.

Thanks folks and PLEASE participate.

Titanium.

People will say it's 46-47 HRC so it doesn't hold an edge and it won't cut. I never sharpened those serrations (won't have the appropriate devices... maybe next month I'll do it) and you can see how it keeps sharp after batoning and chopping through hundreds of wood pieces.

What is that folder? Thanks.

Mission Knives MFK. You won't find it in their website, I sincerely don't know what's going on with their business, they're excellent people but lately I can't communicate with them. If you are in the US maybe you just give them a call and probably you can know something more about them and their knives.

what is that fixed blade?

Mission Knives MPK10-Ti. For me it has the best handle that I've handled so far (not so many, but a few already). I got used to this knife, I bought it for diving but I ended up using it in the woods (it was too big for diving...)
Not a slicer, it's just a hard use knife that I completely trust.

Yeah cant forget good ole titanium! people have always steered me away from titanium blades, Saying, Like you said, they wont hold an edge. But seeing what you accomplished on those logs, especially with that little folder, I am going to have to make myself one. That's just awesome man. I'm guessing the heat treatment is gonna be a b!tch though..

Thanks a lot for posting buddy

So, Has anyone heard of a Carbon fiber blade?

Carbon fiber, G-10 and other synthetic blades are mainly for getting through security (metal detectors) and are in most cases illegal to carry ... considered weapons. They have been around for a long time.

Mission uses a type of Beta Ti alloy that combined with their heat treat allows them to hold an edge. Any other grade of Ti wont hold an edge. The material and HT are key.

Okay.. That sucks... I was kinda exicted to make a titanium knife, But i guess that will just end bad, considering I know nothing about titanium. Oh well...
