Hey guys, this might sound like a silly question to some of you but are there different grades of damascus steel? Like how some chinese knives say "440 Stainless" while there are many different varients of 440. I know CPM S30v is just CPM S30v and there arn't any varients of that but for some reason I thought damascus steel might be different.

Since Damascus is just layered steel, it really depends on what kind of steel is layered in. There are cheap, crappy damascus blades, but I think Kershaw uses 440C type steels. If you can consider Mcusta damascus, they use VG-10.

Kershaw does not use stainless steel as their Damascus. They get their stock from Alabama Damascus, and it's definitely not stainless.

beyond the types of steel there is number of layers and number of steels.

Negative. The steel in the Kershaw damascus blades is 52100, 203E, 5160, and 15N20. Alternating layers produce 416 when folded 5 times. High carbon steels create exceptional edge holding. I have a Skyline damascus and i've carried it for 3 days now and it's still shaving sharp after quite a bit of use.

and Mcusta doesnt use vg-10 for their Damascus, they use sanmai damascus with a vg-10 core

There is also a difference between pattern-welded steel and wootz steels. Both are considered Damascus, but one is mostly for cosmetic affect while the other is for performance.
