I did this a while back when I was more into watches than blades.
Bought a bunch of broken mechanical watches to get at the innards, and the cheapest knives I could find on bladehq.
Had piece of ply that I painted with chalkboard paint to make sort of a note to myself board:
Just to remind me to get up and do something!
I called it 'killing time.'
I had to snap the tip off the knife to get the right depth of penetration.
The 'blood' is epoxy colored with a pigment.
For the crime scene 'tape' I printed out the text on yellow paper and cut it into strips.
The whole thing was what we 'artists' call a maquette, a sort of mock up of the real thing, which I never got around to doing. I just wanted to test the concept out and see what it looked like.
I still got some old broken watches, cheap blades and watch parts around here waiting for me to get off the couch!
Anyone else got some interesting stuff you did with old knives, broken blades, etc?
I know you just didn't throw it away!
