Different models of the same brand

I know quite a number of us like certain brands of knives. And our liking extends to collecting several models from the same brand.

For example, if it's Spyderco, you can bet your bottom dollar that you will have at least five to 10 types of Spydercos. And it may not even end at 10.

Normally, how many of the same brand of knives would you collect until you say, "whoa, OK, that's the limit."

I normally put a stop after three unless I am tempted severely, and that's quite often.

I have seen collections where the collector buys everything that have put produced by the company, or until his budget bursts, whichever comes first.

I guess it would be more sensible to say "five of each and no more" but being knife-addicts, it is often difficult to limit it to five and no more.

It varies, a lot, depending on what I like.

I used to have quite a few Spyderco's but I'm starting to decrease the range to focus on certain ones.

Mostly I usually have 4-5 of the brands I like and 0 of the brands I don't.

Lately, I have been all over Benchmade! I have purchased the 806D2, 814HS, 940S, 720BT, and 905!

I've also been collecting Buck/Striders, considering I can't afford to collect regular Striders! I have the Buck/Strider Solution fixed blade, the large tanto, the small tanto, and the small spear point. Now all I need is the large spear point! :D

This also carries over to the custom side. There are three makers I have been collecting and originally thought that three maybe four would be the absolute limit from each. Well that got blown out of the water as I now have 8 folders from J.W. Smith, with at least one more that he is building for me. Where will I stop? Well I'm sure that the budget will long be broken before I run out of models to collect!

5-6 from each brand then something else usually catches my interest.

I don't think about it that much. Besides, many good brands have good and nasty knives in their lineup. (Buck, Kershaw, CRKT)

I'm much more likely (and do) have several versions of a particular model. For example, I like the SOG Autoclip and have about 6 different ones. I have all the CRKT Commanders except one I can't find.

I have a buddy that collects all the Kershaws designed by Ken Onion. I've heard of people doing the same with Hammond and CRKT.

Some people only like the Axis Lock Benchmades.

I think there's usually something more specific than Brand that people get hooked on. Besides, can you IMAGINE collecting all the Bucks or Kershaws or CRKTs?

I was collecting Benchmades for a while but I got distracted by Autos. Now I'm getting a bunch of Microtechs, but there aren't THAT MANY models unless you count special runs and customs which I don't.

OH, and about the "whoa, OK, that's the limit."...
You're on the WRONG forum for that kind of control, pal!
;)

I'm a knife nut, but don't consider myself a collector. I consider these two different things.

I don't buy knives to fill a display case, or for investment, or just for the sake of buying knives. It has to be significantly different, or better than what I already own, or at least fill a specific purpose.

I like a lot of variety, and I like trying out different brands. I've only got probably five knives of the same brand -- so far that's my limit.

Right now I'm pretty hooked on SOG for my fixed-blade knives (and multi-tools), and Spyderco for my folders. So, at last count, I have 11 SOGs, and 5 Spydercos (with 2 more on the way). (Of course, I also have a few dozen of the "other brands" :)).

Nevermind, I forgot I have 12 Bullet knives. I guess 5 isn't the most I have of one brand.

I just by what I like, from makers I like. Drop point is my favorite style of blade so I buy a lot of Busse's and have on order a K2 Dozier (my first of probably many). Vic Sak's are the inspiration for my love of drop point blades. I have a bunch of Vic's and will continue to collect them until I am dead :D .

i kinda collect BM AFCK's, have a lot of the diff models (ie 800, 800 BT, 800S,800M2,800FS,etc) and the old and new ones, round hole/oval hole axis lock and liner lock mini and std size, stock versions and a recupero version, prototypes/preproductions/first production runs/etc, i have a lot of BM 800's and love them all!!!!!

the only one i am still really looking for is a 800S w/the black butterfly and silver background, the very first run i do believe.......so still have aways to go, lol
