Different Opinel Locks?

Hi all,

I went to a local hardware store yesterday to buyt myself some Opinel n°7 knives for modding purposes.
When I got home, I noticed that the locks were different. 2 of the 3 knives did not have the familiar locking system, which allows the blades to be locked both in opened and closed position. Those 2 can be locked when the blade is opened in the traditional way, but there's no "chip" out of the lower part of the locking ring so the blade cannot be locked while closed.
Is this something that happens more often? Typical, a-typical? Or is it perhaps a fabrication error? I couldn't find anything on the web so I thought I'd ask you guys for some more information on this. Perhaps someone noticed the same thing in their collection?

On the picture you can clearly see what I understand as "normal" Opinel lock on the left, and the non-locking-when-closed lock on the right.
One of the 2 "weirdo's" is already undergoing a mod so it isn't on the picture.

@moderators: I wasn't sure were to put this thread so I posted this in general...

IMHO it's a production flaw... Maybe there were a batch with this problem?!?

I never heard of Opinel with that kind of locking, only in open blade position.

Maybe you should contact CS@opinel for that I'm sure they'll get back immidiately

I might do that to acquire some more info. I'm not going to send it back or anything however, I find it a sweet collectible this way.

The one on the right is the "old" locking ring. They all used to be like that. The "lock in closed position" ring is a rather recent development.

Kind regards,

Jos

I am going to try to alter my ancient Openel to lock when closed (like the one on left). It's got enough wear to open in my pocket. Not good.
