I just got my first seb and one handle slab has a b15 and one has an a15, and the birthdate is september 15? How anomalous is this? Seems a bit strange to me!

I have seen it a few times. One of the knives I have in for spa treatment right now is a D from one year and an A from the next.

That is perfectly normal. A15 is 1st quarter of 2015 and B15 is 2nd quarter of 2015 for the scale casting or machining. I believe they manufacture their scales in lots. If there was a difference of several years, that might be an indication of a warranty or other repair by CRK.

It is a problem if your birthcard has an earlier date than either of your scales.

They aren't going to throw out the odd scale from a earlier lot. It's not the norm, but not that unusual either.

I have a knife like that, but it is a CF handled one. That makes sense, but I can see how it would also happen on the standard knives, too.

Vaporstang has the answer on this one. You will also, at times, find someone selling a CRK with a custom scale that they had made being sold with a CRK with different date code. I have two custom scales that I have had made for large 21's.

i have a small Classic UG with slabs that have a date code for 2007, the birth card is early 2008. I don't see an issue cause like Vaporstang said, the date card is post slab dates...

You see this often, nothing to be alarmed about. The dates on the scales are when the scales were made. The scales are made every quarter. So you will see A,B,C,D of a given year. Again, this is when the scales were made, not necessarily the knife. There is info on this in my CRK Timeline Sticky.
