Is there such a concept? If so, what would be the best sharpener for 5160 with an RC of 54-55?

Thank you my friends.

Yes, there is. Though I can think of much less crude methods than a file to sharpen.

With todays wide range of steels one sharpener doesn't exactly meet the demands that some steels have. A high wear resistance steel needs a different stone than a basic carbon steel, both could be sharpened on the same stone but the results might not be the best for the individual steel.

Kukris should be sort of sharp, but shaving sharp edge is not durable.

im not a chopping pro, but if I get my kukri shaving shatp it wedges in wood.

A dull kukri eats wood regardless (im assuming weight helps).

The dressing knife seems to be all you need to keep kukri in chopping condition.

Any sharper and its for showing off.

5160 shaving sharp - yes. However this large blade designed for high momentum impact, so shaving edge is not practical. Use half-round file or high quality 3m Aluminum Oxide sand paper wrap around a beer bottle to sharpen this kukri, especially useful for the recurve (inside elbow edge).

All depends on what you are cutting. If your chopping wood all day long a high polished edge will vastly outperform a coarser edge in that task. If you are using it for everything then something between coarse and fine will do best, and if your beating the crap out of it then a coarse stone just to keep the shape will be all you need. If it was me a coarse waterstone around 220 grit and a medium around 1000 grit is all I would use. I say waterstones because in my experience they do best on carbon steels.

Thank you so much for the wealth of knowledge guys! I really feel one must hand sharpen their own blade...to sort of become one with the blade...know your steel inside and out.
