I was looking at steel supplier, they offer 1095 in 3 different forms, I was wondering what the difference is.
Hot rolled P&O spheroidized
Cold rolled spheroidezed
Hot rolled as rolled
P&O ? Pickled and oiled ? scale is removed by acid pickling and oiled to prevent rust.
Hot rolled would have a pearlite structure suitable if you will forge it but it's difficult to machine or grind.
Spheroidized is a structure where the carbide is spheroidized and it is easy to machine and grind.
Cold rolled has tighter dimensions [than hot rolled] as it is rolled after spheroidizing to desired dimensions.
If you're gonna forge it get the cheapest. If you're gonna do stock removal get the cold rolled and spheroidized annealed. CRA (cold rolled annealed) will have a nice clean finish and save a lot of time for stock removal.
