There's a Damacus blade Boker folding hunter pattern in a shop locally (I know not from what year of manufacture, but probably NOS), similiar to the Eurofighter II Damascus on page 10 of the Spring/Summer '09 catalog.
The Damascus pattern on the blade is similiar at least, if not the for-sale knife's entire concept (which I do not see in current production): though perhaps the "waves" are a bit steeper and deeper, extending towards the spine further into the grind. Not a pattern like "twisted" gives, but very consistent in the wave "frequency," if you will.
I know little about current modern Damacus details, but of course am aware of the general lore of Damascus.
This would be my first foray into Damascus steel -assuming I purchase said kinife- though I have a small drawer-full of traditional pocket folders.
My question involves the various Damascus patterns I see (mostly from model to model in the new Boker catalog).
Now, my understanding of Damascus lore involves its edge holding and legendary flexibilty with toughness in swords of antiquity.
Obviously a stiff contemporary hunting blade pattern will not be emphasizing the flexibilty aspects, and I doubt I will ever be dressing out any large fur bearing mammals with the aforementioned knife: I just want to own an example of the cutler's art such as this, which will likely be the most expensive of centerpieces to my humble lil' ol' collection of drawer queens and tent peg whittlers.
I am just wondering what the attributes of the various Damascus patterns I see around are?
I should say I generally prefer carbon-steel to most stainless, though I like Boker stainless (and Victorinox, generally).
Thanks,
-Steve
