This is the new design by the Chinese makers that were selling Edge Pro clones.

Still too close, or different enough?

I see very little difference.

I like that height-adjustable rear leg though.

I don't know why people are worried about knock-offs. If the original is better value for money it won't suffer. Competition pushes for innovative practices/ solutions.

I just wonder if the maker of this one is available almost all the time to answer any questions you may have about sharpening a certain knife or the system in general. Also I saw one of the older styles online and I think they were selling them for 32 dollars, I wonder about the quality of the stones, and the craftsmanship on a 32 dollar system.

Exactly. If someone values those aspects of the purchase then the original might be better value than the knock-off.

AAAND if the trends show that consumers value stones and service over the actual product then for the knock-off to be successful the knock-off company would need to cater to those consumer's wants.

This is a coincidence,
I have just e-mailed them with a few questions regarding the 1/2" stones, and Bob replied right away with some great advice, and also saved me some cash by doing so.
Can't beat that kind of service.
Cheers

I can tell you that the stones mostly suck. Especially the low grit one. I believe it's made using mud or an old biscuit or something... Mine has dished in the center and it creates way too much mud without removing enough steel. Utter caca imo. The other stones? Eh... Serviceable, mostly. The white (ceramic?) is pretty good.

I'm sure that your comment regarding customer support was sarcastic. If not, no they won't be able to help you. You're on your own, but honestly there is so much support on YouTube and here that I'm pretty happy with my skill level.

I bought one EP stone to use with my clone, and it won't be my last. I plan to buy a few different things.

As far as construction and quality go, the truth is that they are pretty darn comparable.

Mine is set up with 9 rare earth magnets, and I'm going to get the drill stop collar and quick change spring.

I figure that after everything I end up buying from EP they won't be out too much money, and there's no way I would have bought another EP anyway.

I just wondered what you guys thought of the new design. I might pick one of these up too just to see how it is, provided the US seller that I bought my other one from stocks them.

You are going to buy a second clone just to try it out. I suppose they are cheap enough to have a bunch of em laying around the house but why? They do the same thing. I got one EdgPro Apex and that's all I need. After I bought it, my desire to try out this and that subsided content with what it can do.

You know, I never knew (obviously) that that model existed...

Strange how it went completely under my radar.

The reason I'd buy one is to see the differences between the two. I kind of like the base (but then, maybe not) and EP must have thought there were reason enough to make some changes.

To be honest, I realized my mistake pretty much right after posting the thread (started research), and I was tempted to edit it, but I should have known before posting. :o
