Different Types Of Scotch Brite

I'm due to get a horn handle khuk in about a week and a half. I plan to take off the extra shine so that it provides a secure grip, like Yvsa did with his 18" AK. My question is what type of green Scotch Brite is used for this? Is it the type used for scrubbing dishes? I've seen Scotch Brite cloths but none were green and the color was about the only difference between the different cloths. Would the proper type of Scotch Brite be easily available (i.e. at your local Walmart)? Thanks for any and all help.

I used very fine (4-ought) sandpaper. You need NO pressure, literally brushing the handle with a corner is pretty much enough. My results seemed OK; the Scotch-Brite fans can talk about that.

If you do it this way, be sure to mask off the stuff you don't want to roughen. I only brushed the part between the rings and bolster, and masked them off with tape so they wouldn't get scratched up.

Bob, I've used the maroon (very fine) & light gray (ultra fine) Scoth-Brite pads. The Home Depot near me carries them. I know there is also a green but I don't know what grit that may be.

Scotch brite pads are just like sandpaper. There are different grades of the stuff. Take a look at www.rockler.com they have four different grades of the stuff. I would go with the 'grey' it should give you plenty of grip and a nice even matte finnish.

At the moment I don't recall which I used on mine, the red or the grey.
All it takes is just to get the polish off to improve the grip.
And Doc has a great idea about masking things off you don't want dulled down.
I think it looks better if you go the same direction with the Scotch-Brite® instead of a bunch of swirls but YMMV.

Thanks for the help. I'll probably just get some really fine sandpaper at the town Kroger store. I'll let everyone know how it turns out after I get the khuk and field test it.

I used 2000 grit sandpaper and got wonderful results

Improved grip, nice even matte finish and it brought out the layering of the horn. It also works for sharpening with a minimal amount of removal. And you can get it at your friendly neighborhood Wal-Mart.
