Differential Hardening of Swamp Rat Blades

Anyone have any idea how Busse does this? They make an awful lot of knives to require each one to be hand quenched to the proper depth.
 
I was thinking maybe they had a rack so they could stick 40 knives in the oven ,pull them all out then quench like a giant pizza. Or they could use that stuff that looks like aluminium foil and wrap the part they want to stay soft before they HT it. Or use a clay based version like a katana does. Still RATs are cheap when you consider what diff treated 52100 bowies usually cost.
 
it's definitely an automated process. on some of the older satin blades, you can see the temper line and it's PERFECTLY straight, so...
