OK, working on a coupla Wharncliffe/Hawksbill profile blades, and I wanna sharpen the back edge/false edge/whatever you call it partway up back of blade. Here's problem. Is there any way to differentially heat treat the two edges well? Best I can figure is to quench up to the tang. Can't quite figure out any other way to quench the edges without getting rest of knife. If this is only option, tha'ts fine, still can do it sorta slanted and leave part of spine softer and the tang softer. But that's solution I've come up with, a deeper quench that I can put knife in on slant to catch the full edge and the false edge, and leave part of spine(admittedly small part) softer.

One's about 7", others around 4-5(neck knife). Both fixed blade.

Oh yeah, O1, at least htis time around. THough I like them and think I might repeat the pattern.

would heat treat clay work? put it on the part you want to stay soft. just a thought.

Good thought, and one which I am ashamed to admit I didn't even consider. WIll see if anyone else has any ideas, but I think ya gave me what I needed there. Course, now I actually have to practice on that since I've yet to do anything with clay like that. :)

Thanks Laredo. BTW, just getting off computer, so don't wanna go open thread again, but that present for your grandpa is beautiful, and modeled after a knife I plan on copying sometime here. Simple, cheap little knives, but I have one I've used for years, nicely seasoned with a blood patina. Sorta wanna leave that one way it is now and make one of my own.

quench the whole thing temper the center of the blade softer with temper tongs:D
