Differing Copperheads?

One of my favorite patterns is the 2 blade Copperhead, but as I browse catalogs and websites, I notice 2 different sets of blades:

1. 1 standard clip and 1 turkish clip (my favorite pattern)

2. 1 standard clip and 1 shorter pen blade.

Are these both considered Copperheads, or is one actually knwn by a different name?

I think the copperhead refers to the shape of the front bolster and not the blade configuration. Case makes(made) a copperhead pattern and also the copperlock. The front bolster on these is dropped down on the blade opening side forming a sort of finger guard. Bulldog and most of the other German makes of copperhead are like a small 2 blade hunter, but also have the dropped front bolster. I think that its called a copperhead because the dropped bolster somewhat resembles the head of a rattler. Hope someone has some more info, thats just my observation and not hard fact.

As far as I know, yes the shape of the bolster is what makes a copperhead, it's supposed to cover the top back end of the blade tangs when closed to prevent them from damaging pockets, the canoe is the same idea in a double ended knife.

Yes the Case type copperhead seems to only be made by them and Frost
who copied it in the eighties (made in Japan) and the rescent Pakistani junk.
Usually 3 7/8". Minnies about 3 1/4"

The other might be called the Europeon Copperhead and is made by all
the German companies and other copiers. (3 3/4")

Thanks, I had started to notice that Case and Parker "related" knives were more often the ones with the shroter pen blade.

I am noticing the same with another pattern, what virtually everyone else calls a Serpentine Jack or Dogleg Jack, Case calls a Mini-Trapper.

OTguy, don't you have copperheads (another poisonous viper) in PA?
Maybe the yellow metal color of the bolsters on some knives contributed
to the name also.

Yes, Rebus, we have copperheads here in Pa., but I've never asked one to hold still while I compare the bolster of my pocketknife to its head. Didn't seem like a good idea, besides, its still winter here and they're still all denned up. Maybe this spring I'll give it a go.

HAHA...before you do, could you please add the following line to your will?

"The Last Confederate gets my knives"

Thanks!

You only get my copperheads, I'm leaving the rest to the snakes.
