Difficult to get a Badger Attack?

I'm new to Busse (and fixed blades for that matter) and I really like the look of the Badger Attack. I was wondering how accessable these knives are? I prefer the straight handle version Badger Attack 3 over the E handled version. Any info would be helpful.

and why do they only have 1 knife on their site?

there was a lot of them available about a year ago, but i havent seen that many go up for sale recently. the 3rd gen badger attack is generally one of the ones thats most readily available in the sale forums.

in general they are fairly scarce, in that there is no where to purchase them from like a store. your basically left with watching the exchange board here at bladeforums, ebay, and whatever other knife forums you visit

you could also try putting up a post in the "wanted to buy" section here, as well as the trade section if you have some knives you'd be willing to trade for it.

busse combat has a new production protocol that calls for a limited amount of models to be made at any given time, and to rotate through the line as the year (or years) progress. by making only 1 or 2 models at a time it allows them to keep up with orders and get them out in a timely manner (within 3 months of the sale page for that model having been taken down). previous production where all models were available at all times proved to be less then ideal, and wait times were much longer then they are now.

the tactical badger attack (the new one with the tac handle) will probably be coming out within the next couple of rotations, since it hasnt been introduced yet. that being said the battle mistress is coming up soon, wich may be up for sale for several months, so it may be a few months until its actually available for purchase, and then there is the actual production wait.

the company store has several models in stock for immediate purchase, that will be shipped to you roughly at the time you purchase it (i've found that blades from scott generlly arive within 1 weeks times, shipped usps priority). but even the company store occasionally runs out of highly desired models, such as the current heavy heart.

you best bet, if not the company store or waiting for the new one to come out is to watch the sale boards, and put up a thread in the wtb/trade section.

Yup, i think the BA3 is one good looking blade! The busse custom shop version looks :thumbup:  wish i had one of those...

and why do they only have 1 knife on their site?

mmm indeed, when are they gonna update the site? the War Boar has been at war long enough :foot: :D

Seth,
What does the new tactical handle look like? Is it cord wrapped?

busse_eu17mini_nark_220sj.jpg

the pbf was the only one that came japanese style wrapped, and to my knowledge there havent been any production knives form busse with a paracord wrap. generally busse goes for the most durable handle material possible, and that usually ends up being micarta.

in that image (though its contrasty),

the top is the mini-eu17 wich has the eu17 style handle,

the middle knife is the NARK (nuclear air rescue knife), wich has the tactical style handle (found on the new satin jack, nark, badger atack, pub defender, and i think a few more...),

and the bottom knife is the old 3rd gen style handled satin jack. (specifically the limited edition saber ground .220 satin jack)

I'm pretty sure that, if you monkey with a mama badger's young'uns, it's pretty easy to provoke an attack. :p

oh, its smaller. the straight handle badger attack is a tank. that handle is taller and thicker then the 3rd gen. i switched to other knives because it was so handle heavy, that i had a hard time indexing the blade becase it seemed to dissapear.

keep in mind when looking at that photo that the shba is 1/4" thick, and the ba3 is 3/16" thick. now look at the slightly larger in every way handle - thats 1/4" thick material thats added in pretty much every direction, wich is where the majority of the weight comes from. also the micarta slabs are solid on the shba, without any texture taken out of them.

i was always partial to the basic 5 (waaaaaaaaaaay lighter then the shba. hidden tang and less tall blade, resiprene c handle instead of micarta make that thing a feather weight comparatively), that is, before i split them into a slicer fixed blade and a prybar fixed blade, at wich point there were better available from busse in both catagories.

if you want a tank, go with the shba if you can get one, but if you want a general duty slicer and weight is an issue, i'd suggest going with the ba3.

man... we got some nice comparison shots here... just makes me want a really comprehensive busse archive site even more :(, one with a dead on shot of every blade so size comparisons can be made accurately, timelines, histories the whole works.... someday.....

I actually prefer the hand filling handle of the SHBA to the stick handle of the BAIII. In fact, my SRKW Desert Jack actually replaced my Satin Jack as BOB knife because the DJ handle is so much more ergonomic. It's a love/hate thing, I think. Some people think the BAIII/PD/SJ handle is the greatest thing, other's don't. Kinda illustrates how subjective knife experience can be. How the knife works may be objective, while how a given person can appreciate that usefullness can be subject to his or her preferences and prejudices. So you end up buying about $3000 of Infi in your quest to find the perfect knife, then realize you haven't sold any of the stuff that didn't appeal as much... then you realize you have a reason to need the one knife you did sell two years ago but the price has gone up $180... Just want to let you know what you're in for.

i've never liked the 3rd gen handles. always felt the finger cutout area let it slip forward and made it feel unstable in the hand. i have a custom slicer on order from busse thats done using the 3rd gen handle, but with the back end scalloped out to even it with the forward end. if i had known it was going to have to be a complete custom, i wouldnt have chosen that style, as i would have much rather prefered the new tac handles.... but i didnt know it couldnt be a customized sj (as aposed to full custom) until i had already sent the drawing in.

i think my hands were weaker when i owned the shba, cause when i had it it was hard to hold for long periods of time, where as now i can go for quite a while with an 18" ang khola, so i imagine that it would be better now. its still quite a bit larger then the ba3 though. i remember not liking the extremeness of the middle hump, feeling that while it did give you a lot to hold onto, it didnt really make the knife "Secure" in the hand like the tac handles seem to.

true about the cost of trying out the knives... i bought the shba for 600, wich i really shouldnt have, and directly after there was 4 of them that went for under 400. i imagine the one i had would probably go for a little above that now.

still wish i had the basic 5 i sold...

There's a picture around here somewhere of a guy holding a HOG FSH, and he makes the thing look like a Meaner Street looks in my hand. Meanwhile I consider my HH to have two distinct gripping areas!

And I think my SHBA is the most comfortable Busse I own. I do wish my Meaner Street had a deeper and more secure forefinger choil/cutout. I'm just not that good with a dremel. Heh heh heh!

not the greatest quality pics, but you get the idea. i forgot to throw in the pbf handle...

the 3rd gen handled knife is a nick mod i did, non busse after market style. i have one that will basically be the same knife with a modified handle coming from busse (someday).

the fhh is actually heavier in general then the basic 9, but the basic 9 is more blade heavy. overall i think the fhh would win out in chopping power. the sj = hoglesjtac.

i didnt frame the 3rd gen handle right... i consider the tac handle, and the fusion handle to be about the best i've held from busse. though... the eu17 handle on the mini-eu17 was incredible... i think i actually like that style better then i like the tac handles...

cant wait to see what the fbm can do...

once you start handleing the larger khukeries, your idea of "large" changes quite a bit.

at this point, i feel that anything that can be worn with a reasonable amount of comfort on the belt is not a huge knife. the steel heart his large, but its not anything i consider massive.

forgot to add this - im 5'10" and 138lbs, so im not a really big guy.

lol.... just for good measure -
