Well, after thinking about it for the past three years, I have started on a two car carage/hot shop. Its going to be 24x24 with a gable roof and a 12x24 loft.
Got my holes dug last week by a guy with an auger on a skidster. Two out of twelve went smoothly. The rest were like drilling in a creek bed, which is apparently what got used as fill in this lot. Just got done doing the hand digging to get them cleaned out and ready for the poles. I've got twelve pressure treated 6x6x14' posts that I hope to get in this weekend.
The lumber guy is bringing my first load of rough cut 2x8s tomorrow so hopefully this weekend I will have a little something sticking out of the ground to take pics of.
This is my first attempt at building a building. Wish me luck, I'm gonna need it!

You're a brave man :).

Good luck, I'm sure everything will come together as planned.

Take plenty of pics for us. Make sure you put a big barn door on there so you can bring in a big Nazel ;).

no prob you just need a few guys and a few beers did a pole barn like that before it was fun ......... till the dam roof i hated putting up trusses sp
good luck

A building like that isn't too bad to put up at all :)

But! You realize this thread is worthless without pics right?!?!?!? ;)

:D -Nick- :D

Good luck!!! My pops wrote a book on building polebarns -- if you want I'll have him send you one if that would help at all.

Good luck, you lucky dawg! That's exactly what I need to do. Running out of space here.

I agree, some in-process pics would be great. I am thinking about building one at the end of the summer when it cools down some. I have a 40x40 block shop that is so full of tools and 'stuff' that its basically worthless because you can barely get in the thing. Do you plan on putting up tin or anything on the sides to help keep some of the elements out?

Burchtree, is the book available in stores? I wouldnt mind reading over something before I make every mistake possible... :p

Thanks!

Ryan

OK, you asked for it :D
Heres my wood so far, just got the 2x8's tonight (or part of the first load anyway).... The holes as I said required a bit of hand work to get ready, and a lot of rock picken! This is just one of 12...
Michael, I would love a copy of your pop's book. Let me know where & how much & I'll send him a check. I've got a rough idea of what I'm doing, but can use all the knowledge I can scrape up!
Ryan, I'll be putting up board and batten rough cut for the siding. Guy has a saw mill about 2 miles from here... Its gonna have two 8" garage doors in the front, and I think an 8' slider in the back where the hot shop will be. 10' ceilings so I can fit my press (and hopefully a hammer some day...... :D )
Haven't even got around to planning windows or doors yet.....
Ed

Tell Laura next time to dig the hole big enough to fit all of you! Unl;ess she's just gonna pile rocks over the top of ya! :p

Just kidding buddy, looks good.

Nice pics -- keep 'em coming.

FlaMtnBkr -- I believe Amazon carries 'em.

Hi Burchtree,

Is this the one you are refering to? I see he has two different books and was wondering which would be best. Also, I dont know if he gets any more money if he sells them directly, but if I'm going to get it I would rather support the author than a giant corporation. Thanks!

Ryan

Michael, are you Monte's son? I just followed Ryan's link to Amazon to check em out and damm if that cover didn't look familure.....Monte's the Man! I am using the red book :Building Small Barns, Sheds & Shelters as my primary source of info on this project.
If anybody else out there is planning on building a barn, garage, shed, or shop, this book is a great resource. Well written and illistrated, pretty comprehensive as far as I can tell. If I can manage to overcome my attention defeceit disorder and FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS... I should do well.
I have some large friends set up to help me get the poles in the holes this weekend and then I can actually start nailing things together! I'll keep you informed.
Ed

Great to hear your getting a shop keep the pictures coming next time a little less skin though.

this is the one I was actually talking about http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...f=sr_1_3/103-0545760-8960611?v=glance&s=books

I really don't know if he distributes these himself or not. If you want one, I'm going through there on my way to Kansas City this weekend and I'll see if I can't pick one up for you if he has any around.

Good luck with the barn -- post plenty of pics. If something goes wrong, just blame it on the book. :D

If you are stopping by and it is not at all going out of your way I would love to have a copy. Just let me know how much I owe you for it and I will shoot you a paypal or whatever is best for you. If I can get my dang shop cleaned up I might actually be able to make some stuff. Thanks a ton!
