Hello,
You might want to check http://www.megapixel.net
it has reviews of practically every digital camera.
Hope this helps
Eric

Outside of a dog, a Knife is man's best friend. Inside a dog it is very, very Dark.

I've got an earlier 400 series Olympus and it is great. I highly recommend getting a camera with at least a 3:1 optical zoom like this one has. I like the sliding lens cover and integral flash. Get the floppy disk smart media adapter for transferring files to PC's. It is quick and handy if you have multiple PC's.

For pictures of knives I primarily use my scanner.

Here's a link to a couple cameras I suggested to a friend a couple days ago.

Jeff, did you buy from beststopdigital? What did you think of them? I tried calling them when I bought my DC, but they put me on hold and after about 15 minutes, I hung up and ordered from a different place.

BEWARE BEWARE BestStopDigital!!!!

I tried to purchase a Kodak DC290 from them on Thursday. Salesman told me it was in stock, and would ship Friday. Shipping was $25 for 2nd day air, and supposedly half of it was for insurance.

He then charged my card, and told me I was to expect it on Monday. I call back on Friday to get a tracking number, and get transfered to shipping. 1 hour later, no one has still picked up the phone. I hang up and decide to wait for Monday.

Monday came and went. No camera. I call BestStop and waited 1.5 hours on hold without anyone picking up on the "customer service" line. I send emails using their Tracking Request form, and get their autoresponder and nothing else.

I call on Tuesday. Wait another half hour on hold, to find out that the camera wasn't in stock, wasn't going to be back in stock for 3 weeks. I tell them to cancel my order... and call back yesterday to make sure it's been cancelled. Wait another 30 minutes on the phone. Suprise, suprise, it still hasn't been cancelled.

This is the worst company I've ever done business with. *Every* salesperson is rude. Customer service is non-existant. I think I'm going to have to charge back my card today, because quite frankly I don't trust them to credit me back.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!

No, I didn't buy from them. They just advertised good prices and had good product descriptions on the net. I found them by doing a product search at cnet.com.

I paid more than $500 for mine (and that was with an employee discount from CompUSA). I'd shop the web for products like this. I expect that you would save a couple hundred dollars that way. I don't generally worry much about service, but I'd probably look elsewhere on the web if I was left hanging for over 5 minutes.

Eric, thanks for that link. Now for some knife content. ;^)

I wanted a camera that would give me an instant picture of my knives. I make a knife and I ship it to my customer. At least this way, I will be able to post some new work.

FWIW, I went to mysimon.com and found out that buy.com had the Olympus D-460Z Digital
Camera in stock for $399.95. Not bad, since on eBay they are bid up to $460-475. List is $499.95.

Spark, sorry about your trouble. Yeah, take that problem to your credit card company.

Hey, it happens... I too went to buy.com after my fiasco with BestStopDigital. Bought the camera on Tuesday, it was in my hands Wednesday (which suprised the heck out of me since I paid for 2nd day shipping), and everything was smooth as silk. Great prices, great customer service when I called back and asked some questions, and I'll definately be doing business again with them.

An excellent place for quick shipping is mobshop.com. Their prices are good, as well. It's one of those group buy things, but they ship immediately after the cycle closes. I got my Palm V there for $203. Their selection is somewhat limited, however.

Check out dealmac.com (or dealpc.com) for coupon codes and you can save another 10-20%!

As for what model to get, I have no idea.

Glad I didn't buy from beststop. I bought from digitalandvideo.com. When I called right after hanging up on beststop, the background noise sounded the same! Anyway, I ordered from digitalandvideo, but got semi-scammed into buying the accessory kit (which I wanted, but didn't really know a fair price). The sales rep gave me his extension and was fairly polite, but I'll be glad when I hve my order in my hand.

Both places are in NYC, if that gives any indication to the customer service. Not that I have a problem with New Yorkers, especially those that appreciate knives. Consumer electronics tend to attract the con-artist type, whereas all the knife sites that I've deal with (and almost all of the cycling sites) are all very curteous and straight shooting.

I have purchased several items from buy.com and have been very satisfied with their prices and service. They have had coupons and free shipping weekends several times.

Saved a lot of money through them and they keep you up to date regarding their in-stock of items.

Hey Spark, thanks for the heads up on beststopdigital. As soon as I read it, I warned my friend.

This looks like a topic for the new "Gadgets and Gear" forum - transferring.
