hey everyone, want a camera

been lookin at one, the nikon coolpix 3500.

it seems allright, but meh

what im looking in a camera is

nice, not AMAZINGly clear pictures, comparable to a 35mm camera

decent night time pictures

a frame camera feature

MAYBE video w/sound

an optical zoom.

i cant think of any other criteria, ooh, reasonable pricing

Funny you should consider a Nikon Coolpix camera to be "meh". What don't you like about it? It's actually widely accepted that the Coolpix cameras produce some of the best pictures. I have a Nikon Coolpix 880 myself, and I absolutely love it. I've taken it to the Grand Canyon and taken some spectacular shots.

You might consider visiting http://www.dpreview.com/

There are reviews for practically everything. You should be able to find something you like.

I bought the Kodak dx3500 last fall, for about 280 after all fees. I went searching for a digital up to 400CAN, and ended up buying a discon'ed model. Saved me 300 from buying while it's being produced. Was running 700 at cheap places when it was out, and up to 350 after discon.

Decent pics, comparable to my old film one using 400ISO. I bought a few extra cards for it, 16mb HP CompactFlash car5ds, ran me $40 for 4. Found them at reseller(refub and factory clearouts) for cheap. High qual(1800x1200) gives me 27/card, 97/card on "low"(900x600). 10sec timer also. Use the tripod we have sitting around, and I can get great pics without any real effort. Chews batts, about 250pics before I need a new one, but I still haven't bought a dock for it(and that charges the batts) and have 4 waiting to charge(since august 02).

Still have to buy an attachment to use our set of lenses for the high qual 35mm here. My dad did photography in his younger years, and we have 50-60 lenses and attachments around, as well as a camera that's still worth 3-4K. Just have to go order one from the local photography supplier, and screw it on the front. Don't have $150 on hand though.

the nikoin coolpix looks meh because i was on a review which compares it too many other cameras, and it didnt look so hot, mind you it was the 2200 2.2 mp, the 3500 is 3.3 mp, will it make nicer photos?

thanks both of you!!

I have the Olympus C-700 and love it. I have taken thousands of pictures with it around the world and it still functions flawlessly. It (and other models in the series) are the only digital camera in the under $1000 price range to offer 10x optical zoom. The macro feature for super closeup shots works very well too.

It's a great little camera. It is only a 2.2 mpixel model but it is a better camera than I am a photographer. If I set the shot up right, it has amazing capabilities, the shortcomings seem to come in my abilities to compose a shot and set the camera correctly. Luckily for me, the default auto mode seems to work pretty well in most instances. With an included Li-on battery and charger and a pocket sized form factor, it seemed like a good buy to me. The included battery will take lots of flash pictures. I've never been able to run it dry in a single session (like my best friend's wedding) On a 128mb 8x compact flash card, I can get over 100 1600x1200 images and almost 1000 640x480 images at full color depth!

I don't think you're likely to go wrong with a Nikon.

has anyone used their nikon coolp[ix camera to do the slideshow movie kinda thing? is there a video recording feature on it aswell?

The video recording feature on digital cameras is neat to have as a toy, but dont expect much. They tend to be low-res video with crappy sound from the tiny mic in the camera. Run times are short usually dependning on the size of your memory card. My Olympus 5050 has a 128 meg card which gives me about 5 minutes of crappy low-res video.

As for picture quality, the Olympus is outstanding. It has no problems at all doing prints at 8x10. I like to have standard size 4x6 prints done for little photo albums. I put a few in with some 35mm prints...have not found anybody yet that can pick the film shots from the digitals.

My brother has a Nikon which he likes very well also.

I think it is the Stylus 300. I just got a D-560, and it seems to be the same features as the Stylus only not waterproof. Here is the link:

And the D-560:

The Canon G3 takes the latest Canon flash units, including the macro ring light. Of course, it costs more than the other 4 mega-pixel cameras....
