Dilemma: CS Spike Hawk or Trench Hawk???

Okay, I've wanted a hawk for years. At one point (several years ago), Justin Gingrich and I tossed about ideas for a hawk (I called it a 'halberd hawk' at the time, but it is actually more of a hand held bardiche/hawk) but it never came to fruition due to my hitting rock bottom monetarily. Well, I've decided to go with either a Trench Hawk or Spike Hawk (money is still tight, so only 1 for now). As an all-out weapon, I'd prefer the Trench. The Trench is just damn cool, too! But, how often will I need to use it as a weapon...at least until the dead rise;). The Spike Hawk seems like it would be more utilitarian and have more use all around, not to mention that the handle seems like it would be MUCH easier to replace if/when it breaks.

Which would you prefer and why?

Thanks, everyone!

Spike hawk.

I'm probably in the minority, but I HATE hawks with the haft wrapped around the head such that your swing abruptly stops as soon as the sides of the haft hit whatever it is you are smiting -- Fail.

It has a plastic haft -- Fail

It has a short plastic haft -- Fail.

The spike on the spike hawk is no less useful as a tool or weapon than that of the trench hawk. The blade edge is the same length, and I believe the new CS hawks come with a 22" wood haft. You can also use a warhammer haft to get up to 30". The longer haft makes it more useful as both tool and weapon.

Also, a wood haft lends itself to much more customizing with stains, wraps, and woodburning. Best of all, you come up with a better design, pop the head off and mount it to the new haft.

I own both and believe both are excellent hawks. However, I use my hawk daily to split up wood for the stove and the spike hawk with its 22 inch haft allows me to do that job beautifully with two hands. I don't expect to use one as a weapon but if I had to the spike hawk would do the job.

Having both, I also recommend the spike hawk.

The trench hawk is probably more suited if you foresee yourself needing to smash into a heavy non-wooden object such as a car or steel-reinforced door.

The 22" haft on the spike hawk also just makes it a more user friendly chopper.

This was a big issue for me, too. Thanks for the input, everyone! My mind is made up.

Spike Hawk it is.
