Dimensions for head knife?

The least enjoyable part about making a sheath for me is cutting out the rough profile from the hide.

Anybody help me out with some dimensions for a head knife? I'm going to try making one out of some .070 AEB-L I have lying around.

Thanks!

Here is a photo of one of Dave's and one of mine side by side.

Mine measures 4.25" tip to tip and 5.75" from center of the cutting edge to the end of the handle. I believe Dave's is about the same in width but is 3/4 to a full 1" shorter in length. Mine was made with .053" 13c26(virtually the same as AEB-L) and I believe Dave's was the same. The .070 should work, just be sure to grind it thin.

Grind it thin if you are starting with stock that thick.

I find from experience that .041 is about the ideal thickness overall and then down to zero for the edge.

Keep in mind I'm just a user…..not a maker.

I agree with that zero grind, no secondary bevel. Be careful grinding they are a different beast and stick out different places. Easy to catch a corner on a belt and have it flung at ya. I've gone to doing most of my grinding on a round knife standing perpendicular to the belt. AEB-L is a great steel for this app. I have Peters do my ht and we get 63RC on em. They really hold an edge that way. Still very easy to resharpen. I've spent quite a bit of time on the phone with Paul and have tried to incorporate quite a bit of his user experience into the roundknives I'm making. Go THIN.
